Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • First, I wouldn’t buy G7 for $750. I agree that it is expensive, because it is.
However, it being expensive compared to S9 is not a fair comparison.

For those who did not follow, S9 has 1 camera in the back. S9+ has 2 cameras (one regular / one wide).
If you look at the size, the actual screen size of G7 is bigger than S9 and close to S9+ (minus notch).

Yet, it weigh less than S9 or S9+ by hair margin.

In my opinion, G7 is more like in the middle between S9 and S9+. Thus, the price point is right on the target.
But I think it’s still expensive. Of course, S9/S9+ price is even more absurd than G7 price, to me. What’s even more crazy is iPhone X.

Lastly, I hope they lower price on V30. I think V30 (provided that it is cheaper than G7) is better. Battery last longer and actual screen area is bigger. To me, the performance difference between Snapdragon 835 & 845 is negligible. i can pass that boom bass speaker feature of G7 and carry a Soundlink Mini.

By the way, T-Mobile will do Buy1Get1 free starting this Friday.

  • The Lg g7 Thinq is there to compete with the S9 plus, Note 8 and IphoneX not the basic S9.. They dont even copare it to the regular s9 in reviews because ther is no comparison. And if we are going by screen size and specs its the cheapest of the bunch with a bogo deal.

  • Not surprising and they wonder why…..doesn’t matter for anyone who wants it just wait two months and it’ll be 500 bucks or less

  • This is LG’s biggest problem. They continue to have this false illusion that they are actually competing with Samsung. Those days are long gone and as long as they continue to price their devices the same or more than Samsung they will continue to have terrible sales.

I have said it for a few years now, LG needs to go the budget flagship route and become a challenger to OnePlus and Xiaomi. They would sell a lot more phones at $500 than they currently do at $750. And they wouldn’t have to have the massive discount we all know will happen 2 months from now.

    • Unless they put out a phone with specs every bit as good as Samsung…they are toast. Then they need to make the phone 150 bucks cheaper. But Samsung can price aggressively because they know they will sell more phones. LG as a company cant compete with Samsung, they simply cannot afford the marketing budget at this point. I mean when the Note was exploding, LG had an opportunity with the V20….they did nothing instead. They could have taken a serious bite out of Samsung. Samsung is aggressive in protecting its position, you only unseat such a position with really aggressive pricing with top notch phones not the G5 and G6 being lackluster in comparison…not with always being beaten to the punch by Samsung and then following with a comparable but maybe a slight step below phone. You unseat them by bringing your A game constantly and exploiting the errors of the other party. LG brings their B+ game.

      • LG has no chance to unseat Samsung they are too far behind at this point and they have done nothing to catch up. The only company with a realistic shot of unseating Samsung is Huawei currently and Xiaomi in 2-3 years.

        • Huawei and Xiaomi dont have a shot anytime soon, their penetration into the US market is abyssmal. China is a bigger market, but the US is the 3rd largest population in the world. With 100 million more people than the 4th place. Additionally, per capita income here is still so much higher than China, India, or anyone else with a massive pop. China has enough consumers of wealth to compete…but its Samsungs market for a long time. LG could eat into Samsungs market share, because at Samsungs size the only way they increase market share is from other OEMs going under. My point was just that LG seems rudder less, but then so does HTC, and Sony is an after thought. LG and HTC both put out quality handsets in years past that might have been better than Samsungs…but when they didnt outsell Samsung both companies seemed surprised and not sure what to do….then the S6 came out and S6 edge….Samsung just pulled away at that point.

          • Huawei is #3 in the world for smartphones, Xiaomi is #4. Xiaomi is #4 despite not being sold in the US, which they are planning a launch for 2019 and only being sold in select countries in Europe. They are planning a full scale launch in Europe over the next 2 years as well. Xiaomi has already surpassed Samsung in two of the three biggest markets in the world for smartphone: China and India and they are projected to surpass Samsung in several other markets around the world this year.

In the first quarter of 2018, Xiaomi sold 2.4 million phones in Europe, Samsung sold 15.8 million. Samsung is available in every country in Europe, Xiaomi is available in less than half the countries in Europe. Huawei and Xiaomi both had positive growth over that time period, Apple and Samsung both had negative growth. Samsung is very afraid of these two companies. The US is a big smartphone market but it is not big enough for Samsung to hold their lead if they lose Europe since they have abysmal sales in China, the #1 market in the world and are losing ground in India, the #2 market in the world.

          • yeah, i really didnt think it through. In terms of flagship phones, my guess is apple and samsung still dominate…but yeah, mid tier phones are probably where companies make more money.

          • Yup Xiaomi’s top selling phone is their budget Redmi. Several of the Redmi Models are in the top 15 smartphones sold in the world rankings.

  • $720 or $750. Does it really matter at that price point? Anything over $400 is just throwing your money away. Suckers!

  • Doesn’t LG discount the crap out of their phones after like 2 months though?

    • Yup because no one buys them at launch. This phone will be $450-500 in about 3 months.

      • Kinda thinking maybe I’ll pick one up when the price drops a ton at the end of summer…

  • Well you know, as with all other LG phones, this one will be nearly free with various promos after a month or so. You’d be crazy to buy any LG phone at launch regardless.

  • A typical reason why LG is constantly losing money with its mobile division. When trying to stay relevant, it’s best not to have “me too” pricing.

  • Hopefully Google is paying attention for when the Pixel 3 comes out later this year… UNDERCUT OnePlus 6!!! Near $1K phones are stupid…..

  • LG has to pay for that top notch somehow.
Give it a month or two and Best Buy will heavily discount the phone. I picked up an LG G6 for just $200 a couple months after launch. Anyone who buys any phone at full price at launch is just silly.

  • I’m not sure LG has ever had pre-sale numbers anywhere near Samsung or Apple, and pre-sale projections are the only reason to launch at market competitive pricing–because you have crowds of sheep, err…early adopters, willing to pay almost anything. Eventually they’ll drop price to move more product.

Regardless, I’ve never been one to buy a phone at release, always seems better to wait 4 – 6 months for either price drops or for issues to shake out.

    • Always better to wait, the prices of LG phones drop like a lead balloon after a couple of months. The s9 nine is definitely priced cheaper. This is exactly why their mobile division suffers with sales!

    • Yeah….Im going to end up needing a phone this year…and Im hoping the Pixel 3 will be out by then…but i have the sinking feeling that i wont make it far enough to get a discount on it. I could jsut get a Pixel 2 xl…but seriously, the pixels dont look as good as anything Samsung or LG is doing at this poitn.

      • I mostly like the Pixel 2 XL (my wife has one after trying to wash her Pixel XL) but the lack of headphone jack and water resistance really hurt it for me. I also strongly considered the V30, but to date have not seen worthwhile pricing on it. I like the S9 overall, but I can’t stand using Samsung phones with all the bloatware.

  • Seems like a big fuss for just $30 extra. I’m not saying the G7 is worth that extra money (even if it matched the S9’s price) but really now, just vote with your wallets.

  • Where’s Hairy Ballsaq aka Nunya Buisness defending his precious LG? Lol

Who in their right mind would buy this?

  • I wonder if they did this to then turn around and run big promotions – get 25% off today only (but it goes for eternity).

  • Make a new version of the Nexus 5 with $399 price point. Profit.

And I don’t even care if it lacks some flagship specs…make a smooth experience with a good camera.

    • The price is exactly why their mobile division is suffering. No more LG for me. Will see what the price is in two months down the road and not selling! Go notch yourself!

    • Why would you do BOGO on JoD, though? Genuinely curious…
Like, you’re just going to upgrade in 6 months (maybe even less), so it makes sense that they wouldn’t have that available.
