Verizon LG G6 Now Getting Android Oreo Update! (Updated)

The LG G6 on Verizon is now receiving an update to Android Oreo. This is noteworthy, as I do believe this is the first US carrier variant to get Android 8.0.

The update weighs in at 1.89GB, so be sure you have open storage on your phone and plenty of battery life to get it installed. This one will take a while.

With the update to Android 8.0 “Oreo,” LG G6 owners will have access to Android’s native picture-in-picture feature, a better notification styling (with more controls), notification badges (which are worthless), and battery and performance improvements. There could be much more, but Verizon has not yet posted the release notes. Once they do, we’ll update this post.

UPDATE: Verizon has now posted the notes. We’ve got build VS98820a and the April Android security patch.

To check for the update, head into Settings>System update.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Yeah over wifi this is taking awhile but no rush I am work anyway won’t get to play with the new stuff til tonight. Kind of excited to see LG and Verizon get this out there been waiting for some time now. Good luck everyone and enjoy.

  • Got it earlier. Did take a really really long time to download. No hiccups and the new button to hide the nav bar is nice. Swipe up to bring it back.

No issues so far but will definitely dig into everything after work.

Bonus.. the apps I disabled in Nougat stayed disabled after the update.

  • The download takes forever. My update crashed unfortunately so now I get to do it all over again.

  • That’s actually my screenshot. and it took almost an hour to download the update. Talk about throttling download servers…. Install is going now though.

    • It is taking forever to download over wifi. They’re either getting pounded or pointlessly throttling.

  • Wow, this is a large file. Is Verizon sneaking in bloatware or including security updates with Oreo?
Hopefully, LG didn’t fudge up the update and will require a hotfix in a week or two. 2 GB seems big for Oreo features on an already relevant phone…just a year old.

  • This has got to be one of the largest updates I’ve seen, GB wise. It’s almost 2 GB. That is ridiculous.

    • new OS and security updates. Why is it ridiculous? I actually have MORE internal space after the update so I’m not sure what the problem is.

      • I’ve never seen any update that large when it comes to updating from one version of Android to another…

          • So, I should go back to flip phones just because I haven’t seen an OS update that large? Really? Come on now. I was just making an observation and gave my opinion.

  • “Picture in picture: use other apps while watching YouTube videos”

The V10 did this out of the box but then got nerfed in one of the few updates it received.
