RIP, Daydream VR App Support

Software support has officially ended for Google’s Daydream VR platform. Moving forward, users will still be able to access the service, but the app won’t receive any more updates. The end has come.

Here’s what Google wrote.

Daydream App support ending with Android 11

Thank you for using Daydream View. The Daydream VR app is no longer supported by Google and may not work properly on some devices running Android 11 or later. Many of the third-party apps and experiences within Daydream may still be available as standalone apps in the Google Play store. We don’t expect users to lose account information or functionality for third-party apps as a result of Daydream no longer being supported by Google.

Was anyone still using Daydream? It was cool in the beginning, but I think the VR hype died pretty quick.

  • I used it (after buying for $20) and mainly took it out for olympics and MAcy’s parade streams. But that was it, other than initial game play.

I tried to use it a few months ago, but my Galaxy S9 wouldn’t play it, saying the app was unsupported after being able to work before. So that is it for me.

  • I bought one, played with it for a bit on the first day, put it on my desk, and never touched it again. There really never was anything that interesting to use it with; the few games were boring, 360 video is a cool gimmick, but not something that you want to use for actually watching something serious, and I’d rather use my computer monitor for regular video.

  • Like a lot of things google does they only put effort into this a little while . I remember getting one with the pixel 1 and it was critiqued because of how it looked with the screen etc , it always behind what samsung did with vr , and google never really put effort into it like they should . Just something they treated like a beta as usual. Anyway mobile vr in general is cool for a like 2 weeks for ten min at a time then boom it just collects dust no matter the brand

  • I might still be using it every now and then if it worked with my Note 10. ????
Honestly, I’m waiting for someone to crack the daydream remote so I can use it with my Note 10 or PC. ????

    • Samsung had much more mature mobile vr platform. By the time the note 10 though I don’t think any company was pushing vr anymore but Samsung had a platform they put much more time and effort into than Google. Still just a novelty though

  • still use it. theres a module for magisk that extends in support. works great with street view to explore new places and viewing photo spheres i take

  • I personally loved being able to lay in bed and watch YouTube, with earbuds in, without waking up the wife or lighting the room. I for one will miss it since it was such a cheap solution that worked

    • I would do that too but having to re adjust the the positioning of the screen was a pain. I’ve used my daydream a few times and bought a couple of games on it but honestly it’s kinda of a hassle getting it on and off, the phone will overheat and battery would drain like crazy. It was fun to use but VR is just better for education I think.

  • Received one as a throw-in for buying the Pixel 1 or 2; I can’t remember which. Used it twice for a grand total of about 20 minutes, ended up with a wicked headache each time, and never used it again. It sat in a closet for a couple years before I threw it away.

  • Still got a brand new never opened one that when I got as a gift, I was never excited about.
