This is the End: Pixel 2, 2 XL Receive Final Software Update

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are receiving their final software update this week, officially bringing an end of life to the devices.

The update is labeled as RP1A.201005.004.A1 for both devices and likely includes some last security patches and bug fixes as Google gently sends the phones out to pasture.

While you’re welcomed to enjoy the phones for as long as you can, we typically recommend upgrading now, since you’ll want to ensure you have the latest security patches and updated version of Android. In our book, the Pixel 5 is a solid upgrade choice. Read our post here.

RIP, Pixel 2 lineup!

  • Does anyone know a fix for the camera issue from the last update? Sorry if this has been mentioned but I can’t find an answer.

  • This is the second phone I’ve actually loved. I actually bought a pixel 5 and it’s been sitting in the box for a month. It just doesn’t feel right in my hand.

  • Pixel 2XL is the best and no way will I get another until Google offers one that is truly better and the 5 is not close, huge disappointment.

  • Once I update I think I’m going to LineageOS. This is the best phone I’ve ever owned and both the 4a5g and 5 are completely underwhelming. Maybe if they merged the two I’d jump, but not when this one is still going so strong.

  • I guess it will soon be time for my Pixel 3 XL to get it’s last updates in about 9 mo or so. I have an OG Pixel XL that still works just fine. Battery doesn’t quite last as long but otherwise I still use it from time to time. My current 3XL has been remarkable and I vowed to skip the 5 when no XL model was made. So I am hoping to see a 6 XL with fingerprint reader on back, and squeeze side assistant return. Otherwise the 3 will have to keep on truckin!

  • Sadly I may have to move on from my 2XL, not BC Google is ending support/updates but my camera literally stopped working the other day.

If it wasn’t for the camera issue I wouldn’t consider upgrading, sad as I would have probably held on to it a little longer as none of the newer phones really seem worth upgrading to.

Thinking of grabbing a 4a5g since Google is giving $180 as trade in value for the 2XL.

  • I had this phone before i got rid of it for the OnePlus 5 i think. The Pixel 2xl took fabulous pics and i loved the panda look with the orange button. Never really had an issue w/ it. ***cue Boyz 2 Men “End of the Road” song” for the 2xl***

  • So probably now is the best time to really say how good the phone was. Apary from the small battery and weak speakers overall i really liked the Pixel 2. It was and is still very smooth, but what kept me from upgrading to another Pixel was it’s Google’s quality control. I am typing on my third pixel 2 as google replaced two. The original one and the 1 at replace both had camera issues where it would shut down my phone and this one, idk if it’s because they have a refurbished one, but something is up with the IMEI. No matter what carrier when prompted to type the imei for compatibility i kept getting not compatible with any carrier i tried. I would still order a sim and it would work except for visible which i could only get data working but not calls or text. If google hits out of the park with Pixel 6 then I’ll probably move back to it.

  • I sideloaded the update to my 2 XL but it still shows October security updates, even though the build number is correct. Any one else experiencing this?

  • I’ve owned 3 Samsung phones since my P2XL, but I must admit the P2XL was one of my favorites and one of the best all-arounders. My only nitpicks were the monster bezels and blueish screen. If Google hadn’t strayed off course so badly with the P3 & P4 series, I probably would have never switched to Samsung.

    RIP P2XL…

  • I have a launch day Pixel 2 XL. I checked out the Pixel 5 at Best Buy and was not impressed. IMO the Pixel 5 is a DOWNGRADE from the Pixel 2 XL due to the much smaller/narrower display. I will wait for the Pixel 6 XL. My Pixel 2 XL is still fast and still works flawlessly! No need to waste money on a DOWNGRADE.

  • Sadly, the 2 was probably the peak for Pixel. Aside from the iffy screen, it was a gorgeous phone with a great camera. The 3 was behind the times with huge bezels and the 3XL had that notch. The 4 was awful. The 5 is nice but not a flagship device. All the while, they’ve had next to no customer support. It’s pathetic, and indicates that so far they just have not really out forth full effort to be a player in hardware.

Here’s hoping 2021 is the year Google finally puts forth real effort to make top notch hardware AND customer support.

  • Well this is a confusing post…I thought Android 11 with October 5th patch was the last? (running P2) I check for updates and never received a Nov or Dec update. When trying to update I receive the following message: Regular updates have ended for this device. Android Version 11, Android security update October 5 2020.

    • same same same got the pixel 5 but its screen is just 1080p and the 2 XL was 1440p,
so im using the 2 XL at home over wifi for media streaming until I cant anymore.

  • man, remember all the doom and gloom surrounding the p2xl with it’s ‘blue tint’ issues? people were losing their dang minds. yet all the comments here and elsewhere are all very fond. i know pixel devices aren’t flawless but it’s encouraging so many people still love these devices 3 years later. it would give me confident buying a pixel today

  • I got a Pixel 5 a week ago and in day-to-day use compared to the Pixel 2 it’s… not all that different?
It used to be that a 3-year-old phone was clearly on its last legs and I was excited to replace it, but my Pixel 2 is still a perfectly usable device and it seems like such a waste to bin it.

    • A combo of Google’s Pixel line mixed with phone improvements plateauing overall is definitely making it harder to justify upgrading as much as I’m used to (usually yearly).

Not to mention that phones are expensive as crap nowadays.

  • I have had my Pixel 5 for a week now and I’m loving it. But I will turn on my 2 XL one more time for this update. The 2 XL was such a great phone.

  • I’m loving my Pixel 5, but not sure I would have upgraded if Google kept updating my Panda 2 XL. Best phone I ever owned.

    • Me too. If they updated it with a better camera system, more RAM, new SoC, and new display, would have bought one.
