Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • It’s a me too smartwatch trying to promote yet another ecosystem . Does the same as most RTOS smartwatches. Has a limited number of applications with a lot of restrictions on what you can do. It will have it’s consumers but it is only making the fragmentation issue worst. Want integration with OnePlus Buds, OnePlus smartphones and OnePlus TV? Buy a OnePlus watch that won’t support Samsung Health. Or vice versa. This exactly what consumers want. 😉
I understand why companies might prefer an alternative over Wear OS. But what these companies should be doing is in working together to build a valid alternative that performs better. It might not be Android. But it needs to be something that allows developers to bring their apps to as many smartwatches as possible and for consumers to access the content they want.

Smartwatches other then Apple Watch will remain a niche as long as this happens.
If my smartwatch is limited by software, might as well only have a Mi Fit.

  • Even though WearOS has little success, it still has an install base they could have tapped into. They’ve built nothing that will sway a consumer away from many other well established smartwatch manufacturers. This product is DOA.

  • I’m still struggling with the decision not to include an NFC chip. Especially in a COIVD/Post-COVID world.

    • Well the nfc chip would be worthless since they don’t have a payment app and there would never be Google/Apple/Samsung Pay on some random chinese watch.

      • Well, to clarify, those phones & watches by the manufacturers you listed are technically made in China (just sayin’). But yes, app fragmentation is insane. Having a team of app developers to support all your devices / app stores (e.g: TV apps, Amazon, Google, iOS, web, console, etc.) needs to change.

  • I’ll wait for Samsung. They’re the only company that can get me to wear a “smart” watch again
