Google Pixel 6 Pro: First 10 Things To Do!

You’ve seen enough initial reviews and are now looking forward to your Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro pre-order arriving in a couple of days. There is only so much you can read about Tensor and the camera and Android 12 and battery life, so we have something different for you today. To get you prepared for your new phone, these are the First 10 Things To Do with your Pixel 6.

In this video, we walk you through the 10 areas we think you should focus on with your Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro the minute you get it out of the box and jump past the setup screen. These are our recommendations to help you get the most out of a Pixel 6 from day one and into the future.

We cover security and that new in-display fingerprint reader, customizing the Pixel 6’s lock screen, playing with wallpapers and how they can theme Android 12 throughout apps and settings, the most important change to make to the app drawer, how to access Google Assistant (it’s changed!), which display settings to adjust, our favorite gestures, and what you need to know about this new camera.

As always, this First 10 Things video is long, but that’s because we talk through each area and why they are so important. I can’t wait for you all to get your phones.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Anyone notice the security update on his phone says “Update from November 5 2021”? This article was posted on 10/25 ?! This dude straight up be gettin’ updates from the future! LOL

  • if you go into gestures, then system navigation, hit the gear icon you can toggle on “swipe to invoke assistant”. Then, you can swipe from either bottom corner to get the assistant like on the Pixel 5. Not sure if anyone mentioned that or not.

  • My phone shipped today, arrives Wednesday, the day before launch. Thanks to you, I’ll be ready!

    • In the Wallpaper & Style settings, there’s a “basic colors” button that will give you 4 solid color swatch buttons instead of the wallpaper-themed multicolor swatches, just pick one of those solid ones and it’ll stay that color regardless of your wallpaper.

  • so im curious as it was not covered on the video… but the customization for the “At a Glance” thats on the top left of the screen. It shows the date, and you can have the weather also show under the customization options. The problem im running into on Android 12 with my 4a5G is when you tap it, it only launches the weather and not the calendar. But if you turn off the weather, and it shows just the date it will launch the calendar. So what Ive had to do is add the weather widget just to get this to work right… Anyone else notice this and think its a weird glitch or what??? I miss how you used to be able to tap either the date to get calendar or weather to get weather all from the one widget. And the date in the upper left, that seems to be locked in? cant remove it or move it…

    • It is such a minor annoyance but my god, it has been grating on my nerves since I upgraded to 12 on my Pixel 4. Hopefully its something that gets addressed.
