Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • “Every time I’ve left the house with it, I’m either worried it’s going to slip out of my pocket or that it might be difficult to even get out of one…”

What types of pants are you wearing… leggings?
    JK ????

  • I REALLY want that wallpaper.
If it wasn’t for the lack of Wireless charging this phone would make me regret getting a Pixel 8 and not waiting.

  • The points about difficulty fitting into pockets, etc is why I actually like the skinny ZFold form factor even if I wish I had a little bit more front screen width sometimes. It is thin enough where pockets aren’t an issue.

  • Easily phone of the year. that telephoto is insanely good, and everything else on the phone is top notch. can’t say the same about other foldables, only complaint is wireless charging but 67W is a good consolation IMO. size being between the Pixel Fold and the Z Fold is also a plus while being lighter and thinner. It’s a great formula they have there.

  • I’ll keep waiting until everyone gets is right like the Honor Magic V2…. If it was here in the states, I would buy it today.

    • oh wow, just googled that phone. Droid life needs to get their hands on that and review it. dam its even thinner and oneplus

  • “That said, you can’t really prop it open at any angle, as it’ll snap fully open or shut again pretty quickly.”

    So, no tabletop mode?

    • Mr Mobile seems to have had a different experience on his device he even shows himself using it as a mini laptop in his video.

  • First of all, it’s still disappointing that “Droid Life” hasn’t bought a Pixel Fold. Second, this really isn’t their “first foldable” as this is essentially an Oppo phone. Third, I’ve read about multiple review units having dead pixels on the inner screen, so that really brings the durability and quality into question. Forth, what kind of warranty and support is One+ offering? This is the area I would trust this company the least. Sure they’re claiming OS updates for 4 years, but they don’t exactly have the best track record. At the moment, I still thoroughly enjoy my Pixel Fold (watched a 2.5 hours podcast on the big screen while on a flight Friday and that was fantastic!). It also has the best aspect ratio for this kind of form factor. I’m going to hang onto it for a couple of years and see if they eventually release a model with real bendable glass. That’s when it’ll get real interesting!

    • Pixel Fold all the way bubs! Glad to hear you’re still loving yours as I still love mine!

Given, has some things that need improvement, but form factor wise, easily the best one.

This OP Open was really interesting to me and looks like they did a good job, but yea, it’s basically an Oppo for the American market and no WC kills it for me, I will not buy a phone without it.

      • The only thing I wish the Fold had was fast charging like this One+. I’m thinking if Google can keep refining the design and hopefully lower the price a bit, they will have the best Foldable on the market. I’m going to hang onto the fold for at least 2 years. I’m thinking Fold 3 will be the one to get.

        • My only real gripes remain tensor & the fpr.

Would also be nice if it “snapped” to flat open position though I’ve just gotten into the habit of a firm final nudge as I’m opening it to do the same.

16gb ram too…12gb is “enough” sure, but in my usage I do see a noticeable difference between 12gb/16gb.

Above all else, that passport form factor is what I’m quite sure I’ll always be sticking with. LOVE this form factor.

Another one I forgot to mention that’s kind of a big one. If you use the main camera for a selfie (device open) the shutter button is ONLY on the left in landscape (the proper way to hold a phone camera when taking any / all photos & video)…can’t do it right handed).

          • I agree about tensor, however, it has not been nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It gets warm and I’ve seen it slow down, but all in all, it works well enough and the phone is typically very smooth to operate.

I have no issue with the FPR. I wish the button was below the volume rocker or at least textured, but that’s about it.

I sadly do agree about ram. This is something I found very bothersome when switching from iOS back to Android. My iPhone 12PM has 6Gb of ram and it kept things open just as long, if not longer, than my Pixel with 12Gb. Android really needs to clean up how much ram is used. I have 16Gb on my laptop and there is no way our phones need the same amount. It’s bad coding by the OS and app developers. Same reason why I never us Chrome. It is the most bloated, ram hogging pile of sh*t. Does not surprise me that Google is absolutely terrible at ram management.

          • For me I just noticed a difference Everytime I have a phone with 16gb vs 12gb.

iOS will always be better optimized since Apple makes both the hardware & software, no avoiding that unfortunately.

The camera one I had forgotten about until I just tried to do a selfie again yesterday.

Regardless, all faults aside, still the best phone for my use…love it.

          • I don’t think ram in Laptop is same as the ram in mobile phones (in terms of capabilities), so it’s not a fair comparison.

Also, you have no idea about coding/software development. Fruit company OS runs only on it’s phones/ipads, so less variables to code. Android being open source, which is used in hundred’s (may be thousands) of different kinds of phones/tablets/other products, so many variables to code. Google is doing excellent job with Android.

When I consider the difference between these two OS/platforms, I can rate google A+ and fruit company B-.

Finally, have you used chrome in the last few months? It’s been really good on Windows, they made so many improvements in ram management. I have 30+ chrome tabs, most of them becomes dormant after certain inactive time (may be after few hours).

      • ‘WC’ is wireless charging?

In the last 5+ years (from Note 10+) all my phones has WC, in the beginning I used WC regularly. After the novelty period I was using vey less, for the last 3+ years I never used WC. Wired fast charging is much better in every way.

Curious to know why WC is such an important thing for you?

        • I use wireless every day nearly exclusively. The laptop docking stations I have at home and work both have built in wireless chargers. I also have one by my bed. The only time I’m wired charging is when in my car using Android Auto. Even my earbuds are all wireless charging now. ONLY my Pixel Watch is not a Qi charging device.

        • It’s the only way I charge my phone. You don’t use it, that’s you. I like it, I use it

    • Multiple reviews of different devices? I’ve looked/read extensively to see about durability and have only found 1 reviewer with a screen issue. Still not good, but it could be an early unit issue.

    • This is the global Oppo Find N3 under OnePlus’ branding (so definitely not OnePlus’ first foldable phone). The 4 OS updates is nice and all, but OnePlus has lagged behind in releasing timely updates. And yeah, multiple review units already having dead pixels on the inner screen is concerning to say the least.

Definitely the best hardware in a foldable phone by a longshot and possibly the best camera setup, but I’d still give the slight edge to Google with the Pixel Fold.

The Pixel Fold 2 is gonna be a huge upgrade (7 OS updates and I assume a Super Actua cover/inner screen) over the first generation, but we just don’t know when Google will release it.

      • It is nice to see that they have the least noticeable crease of any folding screen. That hinge is doing something special here for sure. But MKBHD has dead pixels near the crease, so who knows if it’s putting too much pressure on the screen or if it is just an unlucky unit. I’m looking forward to the Fold 2 and won’t upgrade until at least the Fold 3 where they will hopefully be using their own silicon and not a Exynos based design.

    • “It also has the best aspect ratio for this kind of form factor.”

Agreed! The one that Google copied from the impressive Oppo Find N2.
      Pixel Fold: 17.4:9
      Find N2: 18:9
      Find N3/Oneplus Open, Z Fold 5: 21.6:18.

Well, almost. I actually prefer the Find N2’s smaller overall footprint.

      • I think if they can shrink the bezels down on the Pixel Fold, then it will have a very similar footpring to the Find N2. But I agree, watching videos on the N2 clearly showed what a great form factor it was! It’s too bad the N3 did not keep the same footprint.

  • That the device isnt for you is not a con or a negative. I love my Fold 5 and would consider this if it wasn’t for Oxygen OS
