Here’s the Pixel 9 Pro XL vs. the iPhone 14 Pro Max

Moments before the weekend kicked off, a wild Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro leak dropped, showing both phones in the hand of someone who was able to compare the devices to one-another. As a bit of a follow-up, they took those same Pixel 9 devices and held them next to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, as well as the Pixel 8, giving us yet another preview of Google’s big August event.

The more important comparison of the two, at least in my opinion, is the one where we get to see the Pixel 9 Pro XL up against the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Because there is so much talk around the new Pixel 9 series looking like an iPhone and taking design inspiration from it, this gives us a really good feel for whether or not those comparison talks are legit. It also lets us see how Google’s biggest Pixel 9 Pro would match up size-wise vs. Apple’s biggest iPhone.

Pixel 9 Pro XL vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max: Here is that first comparison (full video) from the TikTok account pixo_unpacking. As you can see below, both phones are large in the hand, but I can’t help but look at this Pixel 9 Pro XL and think, “Wow, it actually doesn’t really look like an iPhone at all.” You may want to disagree with me, but this still very much looks like a Google Pixel phone, with camera bar, “G” logo, and the matte finish.

Pixel 9 Pro vs iPhone 14 Pro

Sure, the phone has a similar overall silhouette to the iPhone, with flat sides to boot, but the back camera housing really lets them stay far apart from being clones. Button placement is also different, the bottom setups aren’t similar at all, and I just don’t come away from this comparison thinking Google has given up and is just making their version of an iPhone. Apple doesn’t get to own flat sides on smartphones.

Pixel 8 vs. Pixel 9: On a related note, the same TikTok account posted a comparison (video here) of the Pixel 8 to the regular Pixel 9. This doesn’t tell us a lot, other than show us the size and how similar they should be. I guess it does reveal the major design changes, where Google is bringing in so many flat edges after giving us plenty of roundness in last year’s Pixel 8 series.

But again, this is all very much still inline with previous Google Pixel designs, only now we’re moving in a flatter direction. I can absolutely look at this phone and say, “Yep, that’s a Google Pixel phone.”

Fun times ahead for Pixel fans.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • Ugh … Googles epic fail. The flat side and this god awful camera redesign has utterly trashed a great looking device they had.

    • The camera array layout itself is literally the same. Sure I prefer the square camera bump over the round but that is really minor and hardly counts as a "epic fail". I am sure there will be round sided cases. The shit people complain about on every phone ever released.

      • It looks terrible and a terrible design change so to me it is an epic fail when they had a better setup. As for case okay that's fine but there is many ppl who never use a case and to me I see No point in covering up what I just bought.

        • You see no point in protecting a device that is over $1000 that you hold in your hand most of the day that will be dropped at least once? It's not say a TV that sits on stand or is mounted. LOL I would say 90% of people I see with phones with no cases have cracked screens, scratched up backs, and/or dented corners. The phone they brought that they didn't cover up looks like shit.

          • Nope …… Never used one and I've dropped a device not even a handful of times over 20+yrs, that is what I have hands for. And those few times have never broken anything or cracked a screen or glass back. Fact is I'm not an idiot and treat my device as it should be, they're fragile & expensive so you take care of it. I'm also not like most who treat the devices like toys tossing them on a surface, putting them in their back pocket where they can fall out, throwing them in a pocket or bag with keys and crap…..etc. I see far to many ppl do that crap & then I laugh when they come ask me to fix/replace cracked screens shatters glass backs….etc. And I tease them about it asking if they toss their tablet or laptop around like that? And what do most say oh hell no I wouldn't do that & I'm like why do with a smartphone then they are just as fragile if not more & just as expensive in some cases.

Well I'm not part of that 90%, you saw my devices all most all of them mint to great condition even after a yr or more of use & I've owned boatloads as I'm a phone junky. Hell I don't even put a screen protector on them let alone a case. At best I'll put a skin on the back of some if said device is to slick just so it has better grip

          • You never ever dropping a device in the past gives you ZERO protection if drop it in the future. LOL You never dropping a phone sounds like BS. Everyone drops something at times as we don’t have monkey like grip in our hands. A phone in plastic case is actually more comfortable to hold than a bare metal/glass phone. They make slim cases and it just seems like a no brainier to me. I agree on the screen protector as displays are much more stronger and offer great scratch protection. No protector for four phones now and zero scratches.

          • Believe as you want it's no skin off my back as I know I don't drop or damage them. Can it happen in the future sure and I'll take that risk but not like I'm not willing to go buy another device anyways. And hell I've always got plenty of others sitting around to use if in a pinch

    • I agree, the P8 has a much better design…but Google is now designing the phones to be used with a case. If so, why bother offering fun colors or using a stupid glass back then?

      • could be, but I'm one of the rare birds that Never uses case on my device. I want to see what I bought & not cover it up

    • I agree, the P8 has a much better design…but Google is now designing the phones to be used with a case. If so, why bother offering fun colors or using a stupid glass back then?

  • Unfortunate..I was hoping for a smaller phone this year. My P8 is still larger and heavier than I'd like and I've missed my P5 since moving to it.

      • The P9 will be more than 1/4" taller, 1.5mm wider, and weigh at least 25% more than the P5.

      • You're way off.. the P9 is 8mm taller, 1.5mm wider, and prolly at least 40g heavier than the P5. Holding the P8 and P5 together, there's a significant difference and the P9 is slightly larger.

  • For those saying Google is copying Apple, this is an evolution of the design language from the Nexus 6P.

    • I am going to go out on a limb and guess it's because that is the iPhone they had access to compare. The iPhone 14 Pro Max is almost the same size as the 15 Pro Max and they virtual look the same.

      • iPhone 15 Pro Max is small and comfortable phone vs 14 Pro Max and in hand feeling is so different of the two.

They might look alike and have same screen size but in reality the difference is noticeable.
