The Amazon Appstore, which I’m not sure I understood to still be around for non-Amazon devices, is going away on August 20, 2025. Amazon shared the news this week, saying that it was time for your Android devices to find another app store, you know, like the Google Play Store.
A FAQ has been posted to talk through any questions you might have about this situation, because there could be some of you relying on it for certain apps you got for free long ago or because you…honestly, I have no idea why you would have been using this on non-Amazon or Fire devices in recent years. But hey, here’s what is happening.
Starting August 20, Amazon is no longer guaranteeing that apps you downloaded from the Amazon Appstore will properly operate on your Android devices. If you were still running Granny Smith because you got it for free in 2013, it’s probably done come August. Or maybe you picked up a free file manager app that still works – it might be time to find that same file manager on Google Play.
Amazon also talks through Amazon Coins that were used to make purchases in apps from the Amazon Appstore and what will happen to those. Basically, you’ll need to use them by that August 20 date, plus they are no longer available as of today.
And that’s pretty much it. If you were still using the Amazon Appstore, you have a few more months to figure out what’s next before it shuts down and the apps from it stop working.
For those with Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices, this does not apply to you.

Great, now put Google Play on Fire tablets Amazon lol
Well, that's a shame. I didn't use it much, but it was nice to get some paid apps for free, when Amazon used to do that.
Many years ago I used to buy IAP and using Amazon Coins was cheaper because of bulk discounts and I think Amazon CC 5% off? The last time I tried to use the Amazon app store, the app I downloaded was so outdated it didn't work…
Amazon seems to also be cracking down on google app functionality on Fire devices (i.e. sideloading Google play services, etc., to get the Google Play Store, Youtube, etc., to work). My daughter's Fire 11 Max (or whatever it's called) had an OS update over the weekend and Google apps no longer function, even after ensuring they were updated. The Google app itself says that Google Play Services does not function on the device. RIP Fire devices (for now, anyway)
The article here and other places state that Fire devices will be unaffected. So your Youtube and what, downloaded from the app store through your fire device will be untouched.
My comment is in regard to a separate OS update that happened over the weekend – OS 8.3.3.3 – which affected the apps related to getting the Google Play Store to work. But yes, the Amazon app store is still there
Gotcha!
"and the apps from it stop working."
How does that work?
Apps downloaded from the Amazon App Store check to make sure the Amazon App Store is installed and the app has been purchased in the background. If the Amazon App Store no longer exists or is functioning? The app will no longer work and it'll present an error for the App Store.
Good. No need to have separate app stores when the apps are the same. Too much work for developers. It's about as redundant as having Verizon Navigation and Google Maps
Remember when Verizon locked the GPS on phones and the only way to access it was to subscribe to VZ Navigator for $10 a month? The Bluetooth GPS puck I had to buy to use MSN Maps on my phone running Windows Mobile 6.0 remember.
I disagree, that's Apple's way of thinking. Choice and competition is always a good thing for the consumer and yes Amazon app store was terrible just saying
