Android President Confirms Merge Between ChromeOS and Android

If we had a dollar for every time Google said they were combining Android and ChromeOS, we’d have at least $10 by now. This news is a decade in the making, with quite a few follow-up reports being published every so often. At this point, we will believe it when we see it, but when the news comes from Sameer Samat, president of Google’s Android ecosystem, it’s not something to ignore.

In a recent interview, Samat is quoted to say, “we’re going to be combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform.” Sadly, the interview does not revolve around this topic and instead covers the entire Android ecosystem and all of its different fingers at this time, but Samat did also say that he was, “interested in how people are using their laptops these days.”

With the unveiling of Android 16’s desktop mode, the timing makes good sense. Android users who aren’t on a Samsung device with DeX have long been waiting on a native desktop solution. The new desktop mode offers plenty of great features, such as intuitive window tiling options, multiple desktops, great app compatibility, and more.

For anyone looking to test the new desktop mode, you can find instructions here.

The Android president didn’t offer any further details on the merge, such as timing, but this is encouraging news. It’s a move that has been wanted/needed for some time and should benefit both platforms considerably.

Stumbling upon Droid Life randomly after purchasing a Motorola DROID in late 2009, then setting out to learn everything he could about Android, Tim quickly became an integral part of the site's comment section. After quite some time of strictly commenting on Droid Life, Tim was offered an opportunity to write feature stories for the site, such as custom ROM overviews, as well as interviews with Android community members. Following success of those, Tim became a full time writer and editor for Droid Life, now spending his time on news articles, device reviews, producing videos, and much more. Tim currently resides in Portland, OR with his longtime girlfriend and two wonderful dog children (Loki & Thor). In his spare time, Tim enjoys playing guitar, drinking coffee, practicing photography, and destroying kids on Call of Duty.

  • Hem… Multi desktop… But I want multi monitor. Actually on Dex I can't connect to 2 monitors (I can, but it can only multiply the image)

  • "If we had a dollar for every time Google said they were combining Android and ChromeOS, we’d have at least $10 by now." ????????????

  • I mean, this is probably for them so the can lay a bunch more people off. I can’t think of a single thing on ChromeOS that I want on Android and while Android apps on ChromeOS are nice, I don’t know a lot of people who choose to use ChromeOS over MacOS or Windows.

  • This is neat but I would not expect this anytime soon not even in the next two-three years.
This will take years of Dev and testing with the Millions of different chrome-OS devices all over the world.

    • I believe Google will put a cut off version on Chrome OS and the devices on those version (and below versions) will stay on that Chrome old version and won't get unified Chrome/Android version.
