Spotify Gets Lossless Audio

Spotify is now rolling out lossless audio in select countries, bringing users the highest music audio quality you can get on the platform. The streams will happen in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC, which means more detail as you listen.

Once live in your country and app, you’ll be notified of the feature, which can be turned on in Settings & Privacy>Media Quality. There will be a toggle under each connection type for Lossless, although Spotify recommends you only use this quality setting when on WiFi. Additionally, since Lossless doesn’t really work over Bluetooth, this is really only a setting you’ll want to mess with if you have wired headphones or can connect via Spotify Connect to another device.

To start, Spotify is rolling out Lossless in Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the US, and the UK. It’ll be available to Spotify Premium users.

Kellen

It’s not often that you get to merge personal passions into a professional life, but that’s what Kellen did when he launched Droid Life in 2009. After working years of unsatisfying jobs in the medical and property management fields, he took a risk to try and create an online community while playing with the coolest gadgets on the planet each day, a risk that has turned out to be incredibly rewarding. Outside of Droid Life, Kellen is your typical Portlander who drinks way too much good beer, complains often about the Trail Blazers, and can be found out on the streets for a run, rain or shine.

  • I'm in Canada and pay for premium, yet I still get the occasional ads. The "work around" is I log out then log back in… fix this first Spotify then add these other features, sometimes these companies don't fix the basic things and just continues to push out new features

  • About damn time! I saw a splash page for this the other day, but no toggle in my app yet. I'm still keeping my Tidal subscription around until I can test out the sound quality of Spotify. If it doesn't sound as good as Tidal, I'll most likely keep Tidal for home music use. I still need to try out Qobuz as well. Still can not understand what the hell took Spotify so long!

  • Doesn't work with Bluetooth? I don't think I have seen anyone use a speaker or headphones in the last two years that weren't Bluetooth. For the five people out there with wired earphones or wired speakers, enjoy!

      • Yep because USB-C isnt able to transmit lossless formats LOL
SSC/LDAC/APTX HD can transmit higher bitrates than 320. Sure its not lossless but still a nice lil bump for wireless users.
Wired Carplay and AA users will also benefit a ton from it. Some of you people are still clueless……

    • LDAC/SSC say hello…. Sure they're not lossless but still better than the typical 320 bitrate. So yes, its still a win for bluetooth users that are able to use these codecs.

      • This. I have LDAC headphones and a nice stereo system at home. Better quality will be nice.

    • Some of us have really nice stereos at home where this absolutely makes a difference. 320kbps sounds like garbage on good gear. It's fine on BT headphones.
