You may have forgotten the timeline, but Google was pushing to force all off of Google Assistant and onto Gemini by the end of this year. Like with all things AI, the timing hasn’t quite worked out and they are instead “adjusting” that previous timeline to a later date within 2026.
Google made the short announcement today on their Gemini Apps help page, where they noted that they are making this change to be “sure [they] delver a seamless transition.” The plan is to continue upgrading users from Google Assistant to Gemini “into 2026.”
That’s a somewhat vague end date for this change, but they did say they hope to hare more details on these new plans “in the coming months.” For now, if you have not yet made the switch to Gemini, you can stick with Google Assistant and hope that it can still do anything useful.
I just hope that Google doesn't start to make the current assistant useless to try to get people to upgrade out of frustration. I don't think they'd stoop to that level but as a company who has already dumped billions into this, I wouldn't put it past them.
AFAIK, intelligence is sorely lacking in Gemini AI…
During the past year, I haven't seen any reason to pay for it. Irritated that I have to "tolerate" it being forced on me when Assistant is put out to pasture.
A year ago Google Assistant rocked. If only they would have slowly behind the scenes included AI into Assistant and kept supporting it. Starting from scratch on a new platform like Gemini, incidentally Gemini doesn't even sound like a helpful assistant name, is just another example of corporate negligence.
PS- still waiting on Bundled Trips in Gmail that Google promised to migrate over from InBox
How about we get a button to opt 'IN' to Gemini instead of having it forced down our throats! How about that Google!! I don't need nagged every time I use a feature on my phone or smart device to use some worthless AI feature that only appeals to 10% of the population.
Google needs to make Gemini have access to saved places in Google Maps. When I ask Google Assistant "how long will it take me to drive to Grandma's house" it can answer the question. The fact that Gemini can't do that is very annoying.
Google Assistant is just slightly less effective on Home devices than Gemini. The revolution Gemini was supposed to be is vacant. I don't use Gemini and actively avoid apps using AI, so I'm fine with this news.
