Specific Timeline for 2.1 Update Emerges

Android Central received an anonymous tip providing details into the timeline for the 2.1 update which will start to roll out to Droid devices tomorrow.  It looks like we’ll see just a few updates tomorrow morning, a 24 hour waiting period, and then a big blast on Saturday assuming there were no issues from the initial batch…

* The first batch of 1,000 updates will be pushed out at 9 a.m. PDT.
* Assuming all goes well, another 9,000 updates will go out at 8:59 p.m. PDT.
* After that, there’s a 24-hour waiting period (to make sure all’s still well.)
* Then 200,000 updates will go out on Saturday, March 20.
* Another batch of 200,000 goes out after that, until everyone has the update.

For those not wanting to wait until Saturday, we can only assume that one of the first few thousand to receive the update will leak an update.zip.  And once that file drops, we’ll be sure to have it for you.

Update 1:03PM 3/17: Matt, the forums manager at the official Motorola site, has fulfilled his promise of notifying everyone that signed up at this post when the update would start to roll out…

The Android 2.1 upgrade for DROID by Motorola is being deployed to a small number of Verizon Wireless test users tomorrow afternoon.  It is expected that the broader phased rollout to all DROID users will begin shortly thereafter—we will keep you posted.  A list of enhancements included in the upgrade is available here.

Finally, the guy says something worthwhile.

Update 2:38PM 3/17Android and Me just received word from an anonymous tipster as to the original delay from the OTA update we were expecting back in February…

“Not sure if you’ve heard, but the real reason for the latest delay on the Android 2.1 update for Droid phones is due to Motorola’s distribution vendor (Bitfone- now owned by HP). They are having capacity problems with a) the Bitfone application that distributes the updates and b) capacity issues with the current network infrastructure that hosts this application. I spoke to one of the engineers personally and they mentioned that Motorola reps have been “bugging them all day” because of the 3/18 commitment date.”

I guess we should still be crossing our fingers.

Plus, if you're like me and use your DROID a lot, then you can't see the video as it's flash-based! LOL

I know I'm late sorry Kellex and the rest of the blog crew just got caught up on a few things with school and work. With that said, the post is absolutely true. I received my new “certified” DROID this morning (thanks to Jeffrey Bernard's advice) and I had minor issues with it. While talking to the Verizon rep., I asked her if I can get first dibs on the 2.1 OTA update. She laughed and said the exact same thing the post that Kellex put up. Also, she said those that live in New York will most likely be the first 1,000 individuals to receive the update.

after Saturday, we begin “flash 10.1” watch.

    1. kellex

      That's the truth.

    2. Guest

      @TonyGarza ……..is that a fact/guess/hunch/hypothesis, or just what?

      1. Guest

@Tony Garza sorry, missed the “watch” at the end of your sentence, which really changes the meaning around…….

I'm new to this, but I'm loving the Cyanogen Mod. So should I go back to stock? What would be the best course of action. I usually go by what everyone says or post and have yet to be disappointed. Any input would be appreciated….thanks.

I'm running the CyanogenMod ROM that Kellex was kind enough to video for us. Before that I ran the BlackDroid UltimateDroid 5.0. I really like the Cyanogen ROM, but I'm going to go back to stock tonight to wait for the OTA update. I would have never tried this stuff without all the help Kellex has provided on this site. He's the man!. Also, I've got to finish filling out my bracket tonight!

ok so my droid is rooted and i love it i have the 7 screens, live wallpaper, pinch to zoom, etc but my question is should i unroot for the ota i mean what is going the be the difference, idk sombody please help me so i can make the decision on what to do before 2morrow

    1. Octotron

Odds are that if you get the update you will be able to root very quickly after. In my opiinion, get tghe stock and go from there.

    2. Guest

I think this has been stated, but do what you want….if i were you, unroot, get the ota and install helix for your 7 HS's….if you do not like it, you can go back to 2.0.1, get your current ROM back, and be happy that way….you can't go wrong with the “official” OTA

      1. df7003

ok cause im running the Cyanogen rom, and its great but i will unroot

    3. Jonathan Preston

Personally, I'll just keep Cyanogen for now. I'm quite content with it, even if it is the ERE instead of the ESE build. If it's revealed that there are some amazing features I can't get, I might go back to stock, but I seriously doubt that will be the case. Thus, I'll be waiting *at least* until they figure out how to root it again (no doubt this was part of the reason for the delay in the update).

Remember, you can always grab the update later on, once others have it and have decided it's better. Meanwhile, by getting it right away you risk losing the ability to root (at least for a little while), and you possibly lose some features (3D launcher, right?).

      1. kellex

Koush actually came here and posted that his build is the ESE53 build but he needed it to show as ERE for some Market purpose.

      2. df7003

I like that idea and by 3D launcher you mean the app draw right and yes i think that would be lost and i didnt know if you unroot to get the ota you lose your ability to root?

  14. Chris

I wonder how they actually decide who is the first 1,000 or even the first 200,000. It must be by area code.

  15. Kevin

I hope I'm one of the first. I stood in “line” at the verizon store for an hour before they opened their doors. The line consisted of one of my friends and I add she was only there to see how bad the line was going to be. But I won't be sad if I don't get it tomorrow.

  16. Octotron

So now I suppose we have to assault the Adobe facebook page with hate until 10.1 comes! 🙂

    1. xFenixKnightx

      Affirmative.

    2. nolff

I've been doing that lately with Adobe customer service. I've paid Adobe thousands over the years just to have up to date graphics applications, so I think they deserve some complaints from me.

  17. harvq

Hey guys…I'm using Ultimate Droid 7.8 rom and I love it. I'm taking a poll…junk it and get the OTA, or stay put? Not sure of the advantages/disadvantages either way. Opinions/wisdom appreciated!

the document that was leaked said the rollout would begin thursday at 12pm! This post states thursday at 9am?

    1. Guest

perhaps timezone differences in the literature???

    2. kellex

      12pm est or 9am pst 🙂

    3. Anthony

Wow, everyone here fails at math…

8am PST == 9am PDT == 12pm EDT == 11am EST… Since daylight savings time is in effect, the correct answer is 12pm EDT or 9am PDT (depending on your timezone)…

      1. Dave Tarantula

No one failed at math, just the wrong abbreviation was used 🙂

    4. Dave Tarantula

Read carefully, it says PDT after 9am. It is still scheduled for 12pm

      9am PDT = 12pm EST

  21. xFenixKnightx

    Giggity!

    1. stlbryson

      Indeed!

  22. Hep

I'm sure I won't be part of the first batch. Guess I'll have to wait another few days. I hope they don't find another way to stall this. =(
