The OnHub router from Google, the “smart WiFi router,” is now one year old. To celebrate, the router has gained the ability to control Philips Hue lights, perfect for setting the mood inside of your home. In doing so, Hue lights become the first piece of connected home tech that can be controlled directly from OnHub.
The way you control these lights is actually quite nifty. Instead of downloading an app, simply type in “On.Here” into any browser (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone) and control the lights from there. Of course, you will need to be connected to the OnHub router for the On.Here command to work.
This latest announcement comes only a few months after Google announced support for IFTTT, and Google allowed you to create special skins for the device. You know, so you can decorate the router in flowers and what not.
Are you using an OnHub router? I’ve been debating on getting one for months.

And still no external hard drive support. That’s a shame.
It’s a fantastic router. I’ve never once had to power cycle it, and being able to (easily) prioritize traffic is a godsend.
I think it’s worth it just as a fantastic, no-fuss router, but I really hope they make it into an actual hub. I’ve wanted to move into smart home gear, but purchasing a hub that only works with set A of technology and not sets B-E just makes no sense to me. OnHub could solve that if they turn on the functionality.
I got one for like $130 on Amazon Prime day (Asus version). Love it so far. It’s my first N router and it’s so pretty. Did I need it?….of course not but i like my toys. Allowed me to put that ugly Verizon router behind the TV stand. I don’t own any smart home products so I don’t really care about that yet.
Unless they integrate it with all of the smart objects, I don’t see the point. Sure, the hue hub is a little wonky, but it’s not like you have to use their app to run it. I use Hue Pro and it has quite a bit of more functionality, most importantly the widget creator that controls all of my zones. I doubt the OnHub router is going to be able to replace that.

It’s too bad the “Hub” part of OnHub doesn’t mean you can buy just the Hue bulbs – you have to have the Hue hub too. 🙁
Yeah, if you’re going to bother with this stuff, who cares if you have to download an app? That wasn’t the problem, the problem is the hub.
Exactly! Part of the reason I got the OnHub was the promise of “Hub” capabilities, like lighting control, Ecobee, 802.11x, etc. So far it doesn’t do a whole lot on the “smart home” front.
I just picked one up the other day and didn’t even know about the “extra” stuff like that. But I will say, it’s an amazing router!
True! The ability to come home and not have to mess with it after a long day of fixing computers is fantastic. I enjoy how often they update the firmware/software, especially from a security perspective.
