First we posted findings from DisplayMate which showed a downgraded and 16-bit 3D gallery once the Motorola Droid had updated to the official 2.1. And then Google admitted to the change and said they had no current plans on a fix which disappointed many of us. Well, you can cheer up a little as Cooliris, the maker of the 3D gallery, has a 24-bit version in the works…
“The Gallery application was originally developed for the Nexus One, and as such currently displays images in 16-bit color format, due to memory constraints using OpenGL textures,” Michele Turner, executive vice president of products at Cooliris, in an email. “We will be working on a version that supports 24-bit color and scaling, but do not expect to see it implemented until after the next major Android release.”
So we’re stuck with a slightly less pretty gallery until 2.2? I guess I’m OK with that.

I told you guys they would fix us up….. I just
Didn't think it would take another full update to do it.. Oh well what do you do… Heres a thought… What of we choose astro image viewer? Anybody know if its 24 bit?
Anyone download the new Cyanogen 5.0.6.1? Anything new or exciting?
In the snippet from the article.. Michele Turner.. “but do not expect it implemented until after the next major Android release”. Hmm, I wonder if that is a hint to the current fix to the Android fragmentation that Google announced for Froyo and Gingerbread releases of the Android OS? Could this new gallery be released on its own and not bundled in the next OS upgrade? That is what I would like to see! Google needs to start removing some of these “Stock” applications from the OS updates and just let us update them from the Market, like all of our other applications. Think Google Maps?? Would be nice to have the gallery as a stand alone application. Thoughts from the community?
Excellent point!
Works for me, I can wait.
I honestly never notice a real difference between 16-bit and 24-bit.
The difference might seem like a little bit, but it still bytes.
this is totally off the subject… but can someone explain to me what a kernel is?
Short answer .. the central component of a computer operating system

Hopefully Droid will get 2.2
I honestly never notice a real difference between 16-bit and 24-bit.
If only Verizon and Motorola were as quick to make are Droids better and answer questions as quickly as Google did.
why does the nexus one require 16-bit color?
Nice news.
Has anyone ripped out the old Gallery out of 2.0.1 and put it into a new 2.1 ROM yet?
Sometimes I think that our Droid is being treated like an unwanted stepbrother to the Nexus One.
at least they wont neglect it. This is good to hear.
How long after Google finishes 2.2 do we have to wait for Motorola to port it to the Droid? Or can they just release the fixed gallery app on 2.1?
I don't see how it would come any sooner, since it is a core application.
Something's to look forward to in 24bit Gallery and maybe flash. And having to wait for 2.2……
Hahahaha, you are probably right.
Does anyone know if using the picture viewer provided by Astro file browser make a difference?
good question.
Woo!!!
