Motorola Facebook Assures All that they Love Google

There were some concerns yesterday after hearing the announcement that Motorola would be dumping Google’s location services for Skyhook Wireless and rightfully so.  I know I had to immediately, “Google” them.  (See what I did there?)  Well today, Motorola has cleared up any concerns you may have by assuring everyone that they indeed still love them some Google…

Motorola – Hi all – to clarify, Skyhook’s technology will enhance the overall experience for Motorola mobile device users, especially for those who frequently use location based applications while indoors. Motorola’s relationship with Skyhook demonstrates one of the many benefits of working with Google in an open partnership. We remain committed to the Android platform and to continuing Motorola’s partnership with Google.

This announcement ease your mind a little?

Cheers Johnny!

I hope that Motorola chose better with Skyhook than with the company they had deploy their 2.1 update for the Droid. Several months worth of being in transition or waiting for something to happen can be frustrating.

I'm glad that's over with…I was kind of nervous Google wouldn't support Motorola anymore.

I'm excited about this, my beautiful widgets always says that I'm in a town over 10 miles away from my house. its kind of annoying, hopefully skyhook will fix this.

Yes thanks for that.. I was thinking of how suck it would be without Google. It's one of the reasons I bought this Droid to begin with.

so does this mean no interruption of google maps and nav? what is it, just a different GPS or something?

    1. It sounds like SkyHook might have more wifi networks mapped, which will make the assisted gps (i.e., pure wifi triangulation) better… Until competition makes google catch up. Expect maybe other services on the phone to make use of skyhook-based location when indoors (?)

So if i get this correctly, google maps cannot make use of the SkyHook triangulation but would still have access to the aGPS. So all in all nothing would change functionality as how it is now, but there would be skyhook gps apps that might be more accurate in places like urban environments and indoors?

        1. Yes, according to SkyHook's website, they do not provide (nor do they want to provide) a Google Maps replacement. Instead, they provide a service for accurate location estimation based on GPS, WiFi, and cell information. Software and hardware developers can use their software development kit to make use of this service. So I imagine future Motorola phones will have support (e.g., as a software modification or addition to Android) for the SkyHook service. Applications that request “Location information” from the phone will then use that support. It will thus be transparent to you and your applcations.

I just hope that they don't take as long for their 2.2 update to the Motorola Droid 🙂

Im glad that moto is still 100% commited to google services because i would hate there to be bad blood and have us suffer the consequences
