  • Galaxy Note 7’s Always-On Display Actually Shows You All Notifications, Unlike the Galaxy S7

Galaxy Note 7’s Always-On Display Actually Shows You All Notifications, Unlike the Galaxy S7

As you know, we are just now diving fully into the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, so that means we are discovering all of the new tweaks to software that Samsung has issued this time around in real-time. As we discover them we will share them, assuming they are a big enough deal, like new improvements to Always-on Display, a feature first introduced with the Galaxy S7 that didn’t quite live up to the hype.

On the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung has improved Always-on Display by adding something that should have been a part of the experience from day 1 – notifications from all apps. You may recall that with the S7, we called Samsung’s Always-on Display a “decent first attempt,” but found the lack of notifications to be a major downer, leaving the idea of an always-on display…lacking.  (more…)

  • Guess Who’s Back, Back Again, Q*Bert’s Back, for NVIDIA SHIELD

Guess Who’s Back, Back Again, Q*Bert’s Back, for NVIDIA SHIELD

My hope is that the above headline was read to the melody of Eminem’s hit song “Without Me.” What a classic. You know what else is classic? Q*Bert is classic. To be completely honest, which is something we always strive for, I did not play Q*Bert as a child. I was born later in the 20th century, meaning by the time I was playing video games, I was on the SEGA Genesis. From what I know, there was no Q*Bert, or at least not any popular title utilizing the character of Q*Bert.

Moving right along, a new Q*Bert game called Q*Bert Rebooted is available on Google Play this morning for $6, made specifically for owners of the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV box and SHIELD Tablets. For fans of the original Q*Bert titles, I think you will be quite happy with this release. The game features classic arcade action, in addition to 30+ 3D rebooted levels to play through.  (more…)

Verizon Wanted to Charge Companies $1-$2 Per Install to Get Bloatware on Your Home Screen

A headshake-worthy but not necessarily surprising story about Verizon looking to flood your phone with even more bloatware is making the rounds this week, and yes, we’ve been keeping an eye on it. The report comes from Ad Age, who claims that as recent as late last year, Verizon was pitching an idea to retail and finance app makers that would get their apps installed on Android phones for somewhere between $1 and $2.

Now, that thought, assuming this is the first time you have heard it, is a bit troubling. It’s not exactly new, though, and so I’m not really sure what the freakout here is. Let me explain that.  (more…)
