At Google I/O in May, Google introduced the world to new messaging and video apps called Allo and Duo that left many of us wondering what the future of Hangouts would be. After all, Hangouts was originally released as the do-all messaging app of the future, where messaging and video chatting and SMS and Google Voice would all come together to rid us of having to use two or three or six different apps. Of course, that vision has never aligned and Hangouts has been the butt of jokes for years as users in the consumer space flock to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Going forward, Google appears to be ready to admit defeat, in a way, once Allo launches and Hangouts gets an enterprise focus. (more…)

Google’s Duo Video Chat App Launches Today (Updated: Available!)
Google’s Duo, the 1-on-1 video chatting app that was first introduced to the world back at Google I/O, is now available globally. Well, it’ll be rolling out starting now, but you may not be able to install right away. (EDIT: It’s available now!)
With Duo, to recap, you get an incredibly simple video calling app that is only for performing 1-on-1 chats with friends, family, and whoever else you have a phone number for. And yes, you do indeed need a phone number in order to use Duo, as that is the means for signing up. Once you have done that, though, video calling someone is as easy as tapping their name in a contact list. (more…)

Google is Moving Hangouts On Air From Google+, Bringing It to YouTube Live
Google, a company known well for its redundancy, is making a move to eliminate a small portion of its duplicate services. For the past few months at least, those looking to produce their own live podcasts could choose between Hangouts on Air (intertwined with Google+) or YouTube Live (essentially the same as Hangouts on Air, but locked to YouTube). In an announcement made this afternoon, Google will end Hangouts on Air via Google+, and is moving everyone to YouTube Live. (more…)

Friday App Sales: Dokuro, Backdrops Pro, Final Fantasy VI, and More
This Friday brings us a whole new list of apps and games on sale via Google Play. To give you a preview, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VI can be grabbed for $11, the Pro version of Backdrops (my favorite wallpaper app) is on sale for $1, and you can grab Metro 2033: Wars for $4.
If you don’t wish to play a new game, you can grab the ISS Detector Pro for $1.49, Puffin Browser Pro for $0.99, or Battery Widgets Reborn 2016 for $1.49. As you can see, there is plenty to choose from this week.

Auralux: Constellations, a Sequel, Launches August 25 on Android
For fans of the original Auralux game, launching all the way back in July of 2012, the sequel is inbound! While the original launched with a Tegra-exclusive tag, it appears the sequel will not be device specific, allowing everyone to enjoy the real-time strategy gaming that is Auralux. Titled Auralux: Constellations, the sequel is essentially the same game as the original, but with a few new features that are definitely worth mentioning. (more…)

Logitech Pop are Smart Home Switches to Help Automate Your Smart Home
Logitech introduced a new smart home product today that might just solve one of the problems I seem to constantly complain about. Yeah, I know, this is all about me. But listen, if you get into overstuffing your home with “smart” stuff like I have, you’ll soon know why this might be a great idea.
The new product is called Logitech Pop and its a mix of smart switch and buttons that allow you to automate your smart home and all of its random gadgets with the touch of a button. At least, that’s the basics here. (more…)

Google Play Developer Console App Updated With Review Notifications, Staged Rollout Controls
The official Google Play Developer Console application has been updated this week, bringing new features for app developers to take advantage of. Inside this update, users can begin to receive updates for new reviews posted onto their apps, as well as search through these reviews based on stars, versions used, and more. (more…)

Gmail Will Soon Warn You if a Sender Can’t be Authenticated
This week, Google is pushing the slightest of changes to their web and Android Gmail apps that should help inform you of potential risks ahead when accessing individual emails. Going forward, as emails flood into your inbox that can’t be authenticated by Google, they’ll replace the avatar of the sender with a big red question mark (see above). (more…)
