    The 9th annual DL Bracket Challenge is here! We’ve picked the prize, the teams and brackets are set, and the contest is open for business.

    This year, we’re giving away a Google Home Max, the newest smart speaker from Google. Being the biggest and most expensive of the Home line-up, we’re going to let the winner choose the color they prefer and ship it right away in the US.

    For those new, just know that this is a pretty standard NCAA bracket tournament challenge. We run it through ESPN’s Tourney Challenge, because they do all of the hard work, like calculating scores and picking winners. We just use it to funnel thousands of you there to make the competition more fun in preparation to give you awesome prizes. You fill out a bracket at ESPN’s site by picking winners, submit it before the tourney kicks off, install an app or two to keep track, and then sit back and pray for upsets that match yours. It’s pretty simple.

    How to enter:

    1. Entry is free. (Need to be in the US, where we can ship the prize.)
    2.  Join the Droid Life group from above (create an ESPN account if you need to).
    3. Fill out your bracket and submit before the “Round of 64” games start Thursday morning (March 15).
    4. There are games tomorrow and Wednesday, but you still have until Thursday before you need to be entered.
    5. Winner with the highest total points following the NCAA Championship is our winner.
    6. We use ESPN and their scoring system, along with their tiebreaker system.
    7. This is a “winner takes all” competition.

    Two rules:

    1. We use the “Locked” setting, which means you can’t swap out brackets once the competition starts.
    2. We only allow 1 entry per person.

    On the morning following the NCAA Championship game, which takes place on April 2, we’re asking that the winner email us. Once that happens, we have ways to verify the winner. We have to do this because ESPN took away all messaging means from their platform. Unfortunately, all of the other NCAA Tourney options won’t work any better.

    AT&T asked if we’d be interested in giving away a couple of LG V30 phones to you, the DL reader, and I’m happy to report that we accepted their offer. So yeah, for the next week, you can enter to win an LG V30 (our review). Since we have two to give away, your chances are pretty solid, I’d say.

    Before we get to the details, just know that AT&T is currently running a BOGO deal on the V30 that’ll get you two phones, as long as you buy both on AT&T Next. Should you take that offer, you’ll get 30 months worth of credits to cover the cost of the second phone, making it free.     How can you win one of the two LG V30 phones that we have to give away? The entry form is below and it’s pretty simple.     We’ve partnered with LG to give away two tickets to their event at the New York Film Festival. As you may or may not know, LG is a sponsor of the festival, highlighting the company’s V30 smartphone with its legit dual rear-facing camera setup.

    If you don’t already know, the V30 sports 16MP f/1.6 standard + 13MP f/1.9 wide-angle cameras, with LG really marketing this device as something that can compete with what we’d label as real cameras. Don’t believe me? Check out this video where a filmmaker puts the LG V30 up against a $50,000 RED Weapon camera and prepare to be shocked by the results.

    Now, should you win this sweet prize, you’ll be treated to a night of cocktail parties, film screenings that were apparently shot on the V30 itself (neat!), as well as a keynote panel discussing the future of film and content creation. We’d be joining you in NYC ourselves, but our schedules won’t allow for it this time around.

    UPDATE: We have a winner and it’s IlyaKol! The win comes from aggregate score after 6 people pushed through perfect records (17-0). That’s pretty amazing!

    Unfortunately, ESPN has removed all means of communication between players in the challenge. In other words, I have no way to contact you, IlyaKol. I need you to hit us up if you do read this! We are trying to figure out other ways too. Congrats!

    You’ve been asking and we’ve been silent on it, but yes, the DL Football Eliminator Challenge is once again back for the 7th year in a row. Much years. Very football. How exciting.

    This year, we are doing something a bit different in terms of prizes, though. In the past, we’ve given away a phone of choice valued at up to $700. But today, there just aren’t enough phones under that price point and because the prices of these things just keep going up, we’re shifting gears to make it simpler on everyone. This year, we’ll be doing a massive prize pack to help get your smart home started. We’re talking close to $700 in smart home gear, like a SHIELD TV, Google Home, new Nest Thermostat E, and Philips Hue starter kit. Not bad, right?

    For those new to NFL eliminator challenges, they work like this. At absolutely zero cost to you, you pick one winner each week during the season out of all of the games being played. If your team wins, you move on to the next week. Just keep in mind that you can only choose a team one time per season, so there is some strategy involved. With that said, by no means are these challenges as intense as fantasy football or weekly pick’em challenges. This is the simplest form of an NFL challenge you can participate in. All you have to do each week is remember to pick a single winner. You can even make your picks via ESPN Fantasy app if that helps.

    The season kicks off this Thursday (yes, in 2 days), so you will want to sign-up now. We will try our best to remind you throughout the next couple of days to sign-up, though.

    Simple rules for those new to eliminator challenges:

    1. Join the league up above.  Create an entry for yourself.  Get ready to pick winners.
    2. Since this is an eliminator challenge, you only have to pick 1 winner each week.
    3. Remember though, that you only get to use a team one time and cannot pick them to win again.
    4. If you choose correctly each week, you continue to advance.
    5. If you choose incorrectly, you are more than likely out. Still, continue picking though, as we may not have anyone finish the season perfect.
    6. If that didn’t make sense, check out the full “How to Play” rules here.
    7. If we run into a tiebreaker, we will decide a winner based on these rules. That’s right, we go with ESPN’s rules and they determine the winner.

    Prize:

    We’re putting together a massive smart home starter kit that includes a NVIDIA SHIELD TV, Nest Thermostat E, Google Home, and Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Starter Kit. The total value of these items is currently at around $677. It should be just the right mix of goodies to get your home ready for the future.

    I am not the biggest selfie guy ever, which stems from the dislike of my own schnoz, but there’s no doubt that phones are getting better and better at snapping a user’s face. Not only are the sensors getting better, but with manufacturers like LG creating a lot of custom software to take advantage of these sensors, users can have a lot of fun snapping selfies.

    To celebrate National Selfie Day (why am I not surprised this is an actual thing?), we have teamed up with LG to give away a brand new unlocked LG G6. This giveaway is open to US residents only, but beyond that, we’ll make entering very easy for you.

    If you missed our review, allow me to catch you up on what the G6 offers in terms of photo taking and software that helps create really fun and unique shots. On the G6 is a 5.7″ 18:9 FullVision display, which can be very handy with apps like LG’s Square Camera. This app has a few different modes to use, such as Match Shot and Guide Shot. With Match Shot, you can take photos or videos with the front and rear facing cameras simultaneously, or align a shot and then connect the two to suit your needs. This can be great for placing your head on your dog’s body or vice versa, or even making cotton candy turn into wisping clouds in the sky. Regardless of the shot you’re picturing in your mind, you can safely assume the G6 can handle it, thanks to its dual rear-facing cameras (13MP wide angle with f2.4 / 125° and 13MP standard with OIS 2.0 and F1.8 / 71°).
