The rapidity of Verizon and AT&T’s 4G LTE rollout may have given the impression that the carriers had long ago blanketed the entire US in glorious 4G, but that is not exactly the case. There are still towns out there that need LTE connectivity.

If you bought a Chromebook Pixel with LTE within the last year, there is a chance that you were supposed to receive free data from Verizon for two years to the tune of 100MB per month. According to a number of Pixel users, that promotion stopped out of no where recently, even though the Pixel is only about a year old. In other words, Pixel owners aren’t receiving the 2nd year of free data.
So what’s the deal? Well, apparently, Verizon cut off the deal without notice to anyone, which as you can imagine, pissed some people off. 100MB of free data isn’t much, but a deal is a deal. (more…)
Google published the Android 4.4.3 (KTU84L) factory image and binaries for the Nexus 7 (2013) LTE today, weeks after making the same update available to the WiFi model and all other current Nexus devices. Google will probably never reveal why there was a delay, but I would imagine it has to do with proprietary binaries or being allowed to publicly give post related files. (more…)
Sprint dropped a batch of announcements today, at a press event in Chicago. While it didn’t include their CEO referring to competitors as “greedy bastards” or Macklemore, it did feature a new Galaxy S5 Sport variant, along with all sorts of network expansion news. Sprint unveiled a new 30-day trial program as well, so that customers can check out their network and then receive a refund of everything if not satisfied. (more…)
As of today, thanks to new Uncarrier announcements by T-Mobile, their VoLTE and Wideband LTE network has expanded into all sorts of new markets. According to a blog post by Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray, VoLTE is now in 15 markets after having launched in Seattle only weeks ago, plus Wideband LTE is now in 16 markets.

In an effort to provide more 4G LTE coverage to more people around the country, Sprint has inked a deal with several regional providers to help give them the spectrum they need. These new carriers will now be able to offer their customers new areas of 4G signal in places where it is hard to build out. This new deal will expand over a population of 34 million people, now able to pull down those great 4G speeds. (more…)
AT&T told us that by the “end of this summer” it would be wrapping up its rollout of 4G LTE markets across the country. That date is only a few months away, and since AT&T already covers well over 500 markets and 280 million Americans, new markets getting lit up are hard to come by.
Only a short list of cities/towns are going live today, but who can complain about more people getting to access the great speed that LTE downloads can bring? (more…)
T-Mobile went live with VoLTE service in Seattle back at the end of May. As of this week, they have expanded to San Francisco, according to CEO John Legere.
For those not familiar, Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) allows users to place higher quality voice calls over their LTE data connection, but also use data at the same time. It is the future of LTE, a service that both AT&T and Verizon have already announced plans for. AT&T launched VoLTE on May 23 in a handful of smaller markets, while Verizon is waiting until later this year to go live with a full, nationwide launch. (more…)
