  • First Real DROID Bionic Pictures Make Appearance?

Yesterday’s news was all about the DROID3 and those 3 tutorial videos that it popped up in – today, it might become DROID Bionic leak day.  Are these the first real (non-render) pictures of the phone?  It sure appears that way.

You’ve all heard of this device by now after cancellation rumors which were followed up by a confirmation of delay from Motorola.  The phone itself has been the most anticipated phone on Verizon or really any carrier that I can remember over the last year and rightfully so.  What we do know is that it’ll sport a dual-core processor (likely an OMAP now), 4G LTE, front camera and qHD screen, but since it has been pushed back to undergo “enhancements” we don’t know much else.  Unless of course these pictures are of a real Bionic and then we can gather at least a couple of additional specs.

We’re seeing a definite front facing camera, new version of Blur (new icons and contact widget), an 8MP camera on the back (1080p recording), web-top capabilities, two separate speakers on the back, and a 4G LTE radio that should make everyone happy.  If this is indeed the Bionic, sign me up now.

There are two odd things here that we were expecting to see and wanted to toss them out while we dig for further confirmation on whether or not this really is the new Bionic.  We had heard a month or two back that it would include a hump as seen on the DROIDX, but with sleeker styling – this phone doesn’t appear to have a hump.  We were also told that it would sport a 12MP camera and this only has an 8MP.  It’s a sexy device, but we’re not ready to bet the world on this being it.    (more…)

  • Verizon Announces 4G LTE Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Two Colors and Two Prices Options, Pre-order Opens June 8

For some reason, we were the only site covering the launch of the 4G LTE-enabled Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is odd, since it was just announced by Verizon and will be available for pre-order starting June 8 with a somewhat open-ended actual release date.  The tablet, just as we said a couple of times, will come in two colors (metallic gray or glossy white), two storage sizes (16GB or 32GB) and at two price points ($529 and $629 on-contract).  It will run on Verizon’s 4G LTE network out of the box (3G too) from what we can tell, something the Motorola XOOM still can’t and may never do.  There will also be a whole bundle of accessories available at launch including a full-sized keyboard dock and multi-media station.  Yep, this has “win” written all over it if you are looking to get into a new tablet.

Oh, we forgot to mention that it will launch with Android 3.1 and allow users to take advantage of the new Movies tab in the Market.  And that TouchWiz set of widgets and customizations that you’ve seen from preview videos?  That won’t be there initially, but will come in the future through an OTA update.

So to recap – you’ve got the thinnest tablet on the planet, a beautiful 10.1″ screen, Android 3.1, movies, accessories, two price points, two colors and 4G out of the box.  You should be signing up now.

Update:  Samsung also announced the availability of the WiFi-only version here.

  • Amazon Slashes 4G Phone Prices for Memorial Day Weekend: DROID Charge, Thunderbolt and Revolution on the Cheap

Our friends over at Amazon just reached out to let us know of their big ol’ Memorial Day Weekend 4G sale that has already begun.  They’ve slashed prices on all 4G phones which includes the lineup currently offered by Verizon:  HTC Thunderbolt ($129), LG Revolution ($149), and DROID Charge ($179).  Not a bad deal, I’d say.  Obviously those are the new customer prices, but I’ve looked at the “upgraded” pricing and it’s almost as enticing and just a few bucks higher.

And to top that off, there is also word floating around that these will all be free on Monday, but we have been unable to confirm that with Amazon directly.  If we do, we’ll be sure to update this post.

  • LG Revolution Officially Headed to Verizon Stores May 26 for $249 on Contract

Verizon made the LG Revolution officially official today, and will launch it May 26 (tomorrow) in stores for $249 on a 2-year contract.  This should come as no surprise to DL readers – you’ve already seen the entire spec list which included this date, the first shots of the new black battery cover, and the user guide.  For those that haven’t been keeping up though, you are looking at a 4.3″ screen (not SLCD or SAMOLED), front and rear cameras (1.3MP and 5MP), 16GB pre-installed SD card, HDMI-out, and a 1GHz Snapdragon single-core processor.  Yep, another device sporting last year’s tech with this year’s catch phrases.

It will run LG’s Home over top of Android 2.2, feature Bing as its primary search option, and is the first Android device to come pre-loaded with Netflix.  Been wondering why the Charge and Thunderbolt still don’t have access to the movie streaming service?  They’ve got to sell this device somehow don’t they?

    Anyone?   (more…)

Verizon announced yesterday that 21 new 4G LTE markets would be live by June 16 and we covered most of them here.  By the afternoon though, they had added to the list and we wanted to point them out since some of them actually involve the good half of the U.S.  (Kidding!)  But seriously, we’re seeing non-East coast cities for the first time in what seems like forever.  Still no Oregon though!

Some of the new westerly cities:

    • Boise, ID
    • Spokane, WA
    • Sacramento, CA
    • Fresno, CA
    • Salt Lake City, UT
    • Expanded coverage in San Francisco

  • Verizon Looks to End 3G Service, Go All 4G LTE By 2013?

Let’s hope they plan on investing in some battery technology as well then. Earlier today, Tony Melone, the man responsible for the roll out of Verizons LTE network held a Q&A with reporters in Texas at the TIA conference. A few important things were said by Verizon’s CTO of Communications, the most important to us is that he is nudging at the end of 3G service altogether by the year 2013. Stating that all devices should have LTE capability by the end of 2012, and that in 2013 some devices might not even come with 3G radios depending on how the consumer market responds to the LTE deployment. Verizon has already told us that they want 4G across 2/3 of the US by 2013, so this makes sense. This also brings on the continued development of voLTE (voice over LTE). Back in February was the worlds first ever voLTE call and now we are nearing a time of nothing but.

How do you feel about the dawn of a new LTE era? No more 3G. Optimistic about the future?
