  • Best Buy Expecting Verizon LTE Devices “This Fall”

It looks like Best Buy has been handed some information regarding the release of LTE (4G) devices from Verizon.  In fact, they fully expect some to be available “this fall” and have already updated BEAST, their internal activation system, to accommodate these mysterious LTE phones.  While no specific devices are listed, this is one of the first times we’ve actually heard “devices” mentioned rather than the service which Verizon has said is coming to 30 NFL cities by the end of the year.

Droid Incredible HD anyone?  (I know that name is just made up, but it sounds neat.)

    Cheers Android Guy!

  • Verizon Launching LTE to 30 “NFL Cities” in 2010, For What Devices?

Verizon announced today that it will be launching its 4G (LTE) service in 30 different National Football League cities by the end of 2010 with rollout to the rest of the country ending by 2013.  (No Portland?)  This falls in line with November rumors, but what has me concerned is that zero devices have been announced or leaked that can actually utilize the 4G power.  So business travelers with netbooks and 4g broadband cards will be the only ones with access?  Give us some devices!  (And we’re breathing again.)

Or maybe this HTC device (rumored as the Incredible HD) could be first?

  • DROID X Does 4G? Best Buy Says So!

Not that we find great joy in pointing out the mistakes of others, but we did find this Best Buy advertisement gaff pretty entertaining.  The Droid X apparently has 4G capabilities and also appears to have a new custom HTC Sense theme in the works.  Should we expect that via OTA update?  I guess we’d probably take Sense over Blur.  (Ooh poll question!)  And that’s about enough ribbing of our friends at BB.

Cheers to xgrinder911 for the find in our forums!

  • My Verizon App Updated, Includes Data Usage Tracking

Anyone else expecting tiered data plans to be announced any day now after the newest update to the My Verizon App?  Why else would we need to the ability to track our “unlimited” data usage?

On a related note, we know that LTE (Verizon’s 4G) is on the way and with that, we’re actually expecting tiered plans.  No matter how you feel about that situation, just prepare yourself because it’s happening.

    Here is a leaked 4G SIM card…

And proof that VZW systems are readying for launch…

Thoughts?  Oh, and only one of my 3 devices (Droid on Froyo) would update correctly and allow me to use this newly updated VZW app.  Anyone else running into issues?

  • Verizon Waving Bye Bye to Unlimited Data Plans?

OK, now after reading that post title, try to refrain from completely freaking out for a minute.  We’re talking LTE (4G) here, not 3G.  In New York today, Verizon’s CFO hinted at some major changes coming once their 4G network and devices are ready to start consuming data…

“We will probably need to change the design of our pricing where it will not be totally unlimited, flat rate,” John Killian, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the wireless unit’s parent, said in an interview at Bloomberg’s headquarters in New York today.

The company anticipates “explosions in data traffic” over wireless networks as new phones on 4G networks incorporate data- heavy applications, such as video downloads, he said. Verizon is working to keep its network running smoothly as more of its customers switch to smartphones that connect to the Internet.

I’ll admit initially that Big Red makes a semi-valid point here.  The main idea behind 4G is to allow customers to transfer greater amounts of data even faster than they already do, so you can see how the amount of that data being transferred could become an issue.  And now  after reading that aren’t you wondering why Verizon would build a brand new 4G network and 2 years before it goes lives, admit that it won’t be able to handle massive amounts of data usage?  Yikes.

Back on topic now…like I said in the beginning, the rumors of these tiered plans appear to be geared towards Verizon’s new LTE (4G) network.  Will we eventually see the 3G side of things follow along in those footsteps?  Probably.  Will life come to an end?  Only to those that actually use their smartphone like a smartphone.
