  • DROID Bionic Possibly Cruises Through FCC

A mystery Motorola phone sporting both LTE and CDMA radios cruised through the FCC today, leading us to believe that it’s revision 3 of the DROID Bionic.  There are no other LTE Motorola devices on the horizon that we know of (unless it’s a new XOOM), so it’s got to be it, right?   As you all know by now, the original device we saw back in January at CES is no more, and from what we’ve been told, the 3rd version of the device received its final approval so this FCC filing makes us incredibly happy.

We also first reported that Verizon’s current release schedule for the Bionic is “late July” along with the DROID3 as “early July.”  The D3 is meeting that schedule, so we’re starting to think there is a chance that the Bionic shows up before August.  Well, maybe.  Not…holding…breath.

Cheers to everyone who sent this in!

  • New Verizon iPhone Marketing Campaign Mentions 4G? About to Hate on the Android LTE Parade?

Ewww is all I have to say to this image.  I hate to report on this subject, but when it comes to this phone on our carrier of choice and all of the reports of Android plateauing, it affects our Android world and we can’t help but toss it out there for everyone to see.

What we’ve got in the image above, is a box full of new marketing materials for Verizon stores that mention the word “4G” and “iPhone” in the same sentence.  We’re not saying this means that an iPhone 4G is planned or on the way, but that could be one possibility.  Truthfully though, we’ve heard from two sources with the box that say it’s misleading as hell and that the materials included only mention the 3G iPhone.  So what we’re really thinking, is that this is the launch of a new campaign which will try to sell customers on the idea that a 3G iPhone 4 is better than any of the 4G Android offerings currently available.  Yep, pretty gross.

At some point over the last couple of months, I told myself that there couldn’t be a set of commercials that were more pretentious than, “If you don’t have an i*hone…well, you don’t have an i*hone,” but that could be changing.

Update:  We’ve seen some of the materials that were included in this box and they make no mention of 4G and the iPhone.  What a sham of a marketing box.  Moving on!

    Sort of a random post I know…

    Cheers M!

  • Almost a Month Late, the 4G LTE Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Verizon Can Finally be Pre-ordered

The 4G LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 that’s headed to Verizon in “4-6 weeks” was originally supposed to be available for pre-order back on June 8, but for whatever reason couldn’t quite make it.  Big Red decided that this month long delay wasn’t worth a mention (we did) and has now made the device available starting at the announced prices of $529 for the 16GB and $629 for the 32GB models on 2-year contract.  Yep, it’s more expensive at 32GB than the Motorola XOOM – it will ship with 4G though!

I will say though, that this could be my favorite tablet when it comes to size and weight.  The device is extremely light, thin, and also comes packed with one heck of a screen.  With it’s dual-core processor (Tegra 2), 1GB of RAM, and dual cameras (although the rear one is garbage), it matches up spec-wise to everyone, but again, the weight and thickness make it easily the top dog right now.  You can check our our hands-on with the I/O version here.

    Pre-order.

    Cheers Gustafson!

  • No Surprises Here, Verizon’s 4G LTE Network is Hands Down the Fastest in America

The folks over at PCMag have posted up the results of a cross-country road trip (21 cities) during which they tested all of the major mobile networks in the U.S. to determine which was the fastest.  They looked at both 3G and 4G networks from Verizon and Sprint, the fake 4G of AT&T, T-Mobile’s steadily increasing 4G, and some off-the-wall carriers like MetroPCS and Cricket to cover all bases.  The results are not surprising at all – Verizon’s new 4G LTE network easily came out on top with its incredibly fast, home replacement-esque data speeds.   (more…)

  • Verizon Support: 3G Customers Upgrading to 4G After July 7 Can Keep Unlimited Data

On our quest to try and provide you with as many different upgrade situations as possible that will allow you to keep your unlimited data plan after July 7, we may have another to add to the list.  This is one of those that many of us sort of figured would be the case, but with rumors swirling about and no official mention in any of the pieces we’ve reported on, we weren’t 100% sure.  Well, according to @VZWSupport (the official Verizon support account on Twitter), if you are currently locked into a 3G unlimited smartphone plan and will more-than-likely jump to a 4G phone after the July 7 tiers begin, you will still be able to keep your original data plan.   (more…)

  • Verizon Announces New Batch of 4G LTE Markets for July 21 (Updated)

The coverage just keeps on growin’!  Today, Verizon announced a new batch of cities that will have the 4G LTE switch flipped on starting July 21.  This initial list of locations appears to be mostly east coast, but with LTE already live in Portland, OR and without an announcement from Big Red, we’re thinking this list could grow over the next couple of weeks.   (more…)

  • Verizon Head of Communications Confirms “Usage Based” Plans Will Start in July

I promise that this is the last time we’ll mention this today, but in case you needed a 4th or 5th confirmation on our report that tiered data plans are coming to Verizon next month, we wanted to point out the statement that Big Red’s executive director of corporate communications, Brenda Raney made to AllThingsD this afternoon:

“We will move to a more usage based model in July,” Raney said in an e-mail. “We’ll share more later.”

“Usage based” and “structured” – say hello to the buzzwords of 2011 for the wireless communications industry.  Let’s hope for some positive device news for tomorrow, like the Incredible 2 receiving S-OFF. Oh wait, that just happened.

  • Verizon’s 4G LTE Network Goes Down Nationwide Again? (Updated)

We’re hearing from a number of you across the nation that Verizon’s 4G LTE network could have gone down again last night around 2:00AM Central in an “unscheduled outage” and is not back up completely.  Some east  coast cities like New York City are reportedly doing just fine, but Philly, Atlanta, Cincinnati and some in Florida may still be down.  I know that I’ve had 4G out west in Portland for the last week, but definitely cannot grab a signal as of 6:16AM this morning – San Francisco may also be down.  No word yet from @VZWSupport.

So as always, we ask that you drop us a line in the comments with your 4G status…

*Note – A simple reboot seemed to fix everything for me.  Worth a try.

Update:  It sounds like service is being restored for the most part around the country, plus people are having success by just rebooting their phones.  We’ll keep an eye out for anything else that could potentially happen and update it here.

    Cheers marc and everyone else!
