Research firm BTIG decided it was time to for Verizon’s HTC Thunderbolt to battle it out with Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G to see who’s 4G network reigned supreme. As you can probably imagine, it wasn’t much of a competition. Big Red’s new LTE network is the closest of any carrier’s network to resembling true 4G, and this was clearly apparent after 1,000 tests were completed in New York City. (more…)

Verizon Roadmap: DROID CHARGE and Incredible 2 Headed for April – BIONIC, X2, and Revolution in May
Been a while since we saw a big roadmapped leaked out from Verizon, but today, our friends over at Phandroid appear to have the latest which details more phones than I think any of us can even comprehend at this point. Over the next 2 months, we are expecting to see at least 7 above average Android handsets (some DROID, some not) that will easily keep Verizon on top of the game throughout the rest of the year and this is only one half of it.
So here we go! (more…)

DROID X2 could end up as 4G LTE device?(Updated: Fake)
Our homies over at Phandroid received this photo a couple of days ago, and while we’re all pretty sure it’s fake, I did want to at least show it to everyone here at DL. What does everyone think? Fake or real? It’s lacking a camera button which is what we’ve been told has changed on the DROID X2, but the 4G LTE logo just looks a little odd, doesn’t it? We’ve seen a few people mention something about the weird circle down by the Google logo, but we saw that on the original DROIDX from back in its Xtreme days.
I will mention one thing though. One of our readers hit me up just a day or so ago after running into a Motorola employee of some sort who was enamored with the DX2 (DROID X²), claiming that it would be a 4G LTE device and a better option than the BIONIC. Craziness, right?
Feel free to weigh in below…
Update: Yeah, that photo is clearly just a ‘shopped photo of one that the MobiZone leaked a while back. (Cheers Scott!)

Verizon Experiencing 4G/3G Data Issues, Thunderbolt Activations in Limbo?
We’re getting word from a variety of readers and a couple of Verizon stores, suggesting that 3G/4G data could be down in some areas. We’re also hearing that Thunderbolt activations at stores could be stuck in limbo until the network comes back up. Hopefully this doesn’t last long, we need screenshots of your home screens!
For now, if you could drop your city in the comments with status on your data, that would be very helpful.

Wednesday Poll: Interested in 3D on your Android smartphone yet?
For some reason, device manufacturers decided that 3D technology in smartphones is the new hotness, but we’re wondering how many of you are actually excited about it? We now have 3D devices from LG and HTC (both phones and tablets) on the way this summer, all of which look like phenomenal devices on paper. But from the responses we’re getting on Twitter though, the idea of having 3D technology on your phone or tablet isn’t overwhelmingly in favor. Is this something you have to have in your next device? Is it one giant gimmick? We asked about this back in January; view the results here. Let’s see if anyone has changed their mind.

Samsung DROID CHARGE Appears in Verizon System, Announcement Coming?
There was a lot of talk about Verizon’s Samsung 4G LTE device yesterday including confirmation of DROID branding and an official name of DROID CHARGE, but it’s now looking more and more like the device will be announced at any minute. Along with the DROID branding confirmation came word out of Costco that a pre-sale for the device would begin this Thursday along with a potential launch date of April 7th, so to see it now appearing in Verizon systems, we have to think that a press release is imminent.

Tip: Force HTC Thunderbolt to Use 3G Only, Turn Off 4G
If you needed another tip to help you save battery life on your brand new HTC Thunderbolt, then this might be the best one yet. For those of you not in a 4G LTE area, or who just don’t need those kinds of speeds, this will tell your phone to stay on 3G and quit the constant searching of 4G towers. This tip first popped up in our inbox last Friday, so I apologize for not sharing it sooner. (more…)

Verizon Announces Additional 4G LTE Cities for 2011, 145 Markets by the End of the Year
With the release of the HTC Thunderbolt last week, Verizon wants to make sure that more of you can take advantage of its ridiculous 4G LTE speeds. At this time, only 39 markets are enjoying the power, but by the end of 2011 will be in 145 markets including my hometown of Portland, OR. Below, we have an updated map of the 49 cities that were announced in January plus an additional 59 that were just announced today. (more…)
