Earlier today, we wrote about Nexus 7 orders that were arriving and then having screen lifting or separating issues. At first, we assumed it had to do with an adhesive not being properly applied or wearing out, but several users were able to take the back off of their N7, tighten some screws, and fix the problem themselves. In fact, almost everyone that we have talked to with the issue, has attempted this with success, so we wanted to make sure everyone knew about it. (more…)

The Google Experience [Opinion]

With the release of the Nexus 7, Google set its sights on Amazon to try and reclaim control of the Android tablet space. Ever since Amazon forked Android for the Kindle Fire there has been some confusion about what OEM software customization means. There seems to be some confusion in the industry about what TouchWiz and Sense really are. More and more often I have seen articles arguing that the Galaxy S III and the Kindle Fire offer the same non-Google experience. Even more shocking, I’ve heard arguments that AOSP is Android and the Nexus line of phones offers the “Google experience.” The question isn’t whether or not OEMs offer a Google experience (they do); the question is if they’ll keep a Google experience.

DIY: Nexus 7 Smartcase for About $10

If you have finally received your Nexus 7 and are looking to score a smartcase, then why not just make one yourself? If you haven’t heard, the N7 has a “sweet spot” on its bezel where if you place a magnet on the specific corner, it will then turn on and off your display. (more…)

Nexus 7 Suffering From Dead Pixels and Lifting Displays (Updated: With Fix)
We love the Nexus 7 (our review) and have had almost no issues with it so far. That however, is not the case for everyone. Units started arriving in waves this week and customers are noticing a couple of issues that are probably big enough to warrant a return and exchange. (more…)

Google Updates Nexus 7 Shipping Situation
We know that many of you have grown a bit frustrating having not yet received your Nexus 7 orders, even though you pre-ordered as early as during the Google I/O keynote. To help clarify the situation, Google has updated their shipping status info page with greater details.
According to this note, they have shipped all standalone Nexus 7 8GB orders (if placed before July 13). By the end of the day on July 19, they will have shipped all standalone Nexus 7 16GB orders that were placed through July 11 and are upgrading those to overnight shipping. If you placed your order after July 11, your 16GB Nexus 7 will ship by the end of next week with overnight shipping. If you ordered your Nexus 7 with a case, charger or Nexus Q, your tablet will ship this week, but it may be ahead of the rest of your order.
The full statement is below. (more…)

How to: Unlock the Nexus 7 Bootloader
Before we start, I’ll just get this out of the way. Yes, we know that you can use a 1-click tool, like the one from WugFresh, to do this all without any work. You won’t need to worry about the Android SDK or drivers or anything, which is why it’s called a 1-click. This set of instructions is for those that want to know what that 1-click does. It’s also a way to get the SDK setup so that you can use it in the future if you were to run into any problems. While we understand the need for 1-clicks, we also recommend that you know exactly what they are doing to your phone or tablet. This guide will give you that. (more…)

Retail Nexus 7 vs. I/O Nexus 7 [Pictures]
A retail Nexus 7 showed up on my doorstep today, so I thought, “What the heck, let’s do a comparison to the one handed out at Google I/O.” As many of you know, the Google I/O edition comes in white and the retail edition is officially “brown” (at least according to the box). Other than that, the retail version has a silverish rim between the screen and the rear rubber backing. On the white version, its a black top, black rim, and then the white backing. The “brown” back of the retail version is already showing a few fingerprints from holding it, while the white version does a great job of hiding sweat marks. With that said, the white one will show scuffs or stains much more than the brown. (more…)

Nexus 7 8GB Now “In Stock” From Google Play, Get It in 3-5 Business Days
This morning, we mentioned that the 16GB version of the Nexus 7 had been pushed back to a “3-4 weeks” shipping time frame. The 8GB version on the other hand, just upgraded to “in stock” and can be shipped to your house in 3-5 business days. I think it’s fair to say that the 16GB version has been much more of a hit because of the extra storage. Either that or Google created more stock of the 8GB knowing that it would be gobbled up at $199. You can’t really go wrong with either, you just need to decide how many movies, albums, TV shows, and games you plan to have on your device at one time.
Cheers Innes!
