  • Office Depot Receives Stock of Nexus 7, Gamestop Sends Texts for Pre-orders to be Picked Up

We get the feeling that today was supposed to be Nexus 7 day, but for whatever reason, Google isn’t ready to release the flood gates. Office Depot stores are getting in their minimal stock, while Gamestops are texting those that pre-order, reminding them to come pick up their orders. It’s not clear if Gamestop is actually selling units to customers or not or if this text was an automated system that was betting on a July 13 launch.

If you are able to pick one up at either Office Depot or Gamestop, be sure to let us know.  (more…)

  • WugFresh’s Root Tookit 1.5 Supports All Nexus Devices Including the Nexus 7

When your Nexus 7 arrives, you should be able to unlock its bootloader, root it, and have a custom recovery up in a matter of minutes. After all, it is a Nexus. But if doing things the manual way isn’t for you or you simply don’t have enough time to type “fastboot oem unlock,” then a root toolkit should be right up your alley. WugFresh built one a while back that continues to be updated with support for new Nexus devices, including the Nexus 7. Without having to worry about drivers and the Android SDK, you can use a root toolkit like this, press a couple of buttons, and be on your way.

  • Office Depot Delays Nexus 7 Sales “Until Further Notice”

Do not cruise into your local Office Depot tomorrow to pick up a Nexus 7. While they may receive some stock, they have been instructed to not sell or display them until further notice. Yesterday, we reported that select stores would make them available by July 12, but clearly something has come up. Either Google isn’t ready to launch our new favorite Android tablet, or they are waiting for enough units to hit as many retailers as possible to make a big opening day splash. We are hearing that a handful of Gamestop and Staples stores have already received stock, so it shouldn’t be long, folks.

Anyone taking bets on the big launch happening next week? Oh, and don’t forget to read our Nexus 7 review.

  • “Dr. Paul” Unboxes the Nexus 7, Takes Down the Ninjas

The ninjas simply can’t compete with MMA fighter Georges St-Pierre…errr…Dr. Paul. Another unboxing you probably won’t forget. Be sure to check out our Nexus 7 review, if you haven’t already.

  • Nexus 7 Receiving OTA Update Now to Android 4.1.1 [JRO03C]

The Nexus 7 just got prompted for a 12.6MB update within the last couple of minutes. We aren’t exactly sure what is included just yet, but once the install completes, we will let you know. I have a feeling that it dumbs down Search. For those that attended Google I/O, pop into Settings>About>System updates and pull it.

It’s Android 4.1.1, but we aren’t sure if there are any new features. It appears to be no more than a minor bug fixer. The build number is JRO03C. (more…)

  • Office Depot Expecting to Have In-store Nexus 7 Stock by July 12?

We saw the Nexus 7 shipping schedule change this morning to “1-2 weeks” in the Play store, but will 3rd party retailers receive it as early as this Thursday? According to Office Depot, they are expecting to have them in some 341 stores by July 12. Potential customers can pre-order through them starting today either online or in-store, however, if they won’t ship until Thursday, you might as well cruise into a store in 2 days and walk out with one the same day. I would recommend that you call your local OD to make sure that they have them.

If you missed our Nexus 7 review, be sure to check it out.

  • Google Nexus 7 Review

    Google Nexus 7 Review

The Nexus 7 wasn’t a complete surprise when Google unveiled it at I/O two weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t impress. At $199, this tablet sports specs that most “high-end” tablets can’t compete with. Sure, Google and Asus had to cut a few corners to keep the price so low, but after having one in my hands, it certainly feels like they cut in all of the right places. There is no need for review trickery here, we are going to recommend this tablet over and over again. So jump through the review to find out why.  (more…)

  • Tuesday Poll: Does a Tablet Need to Have a Rear Facing Camera?

With Google’s new Nexus 7, it is a change from the ordinary to see a back facing camera not accompany an Android tablet. To keep the pricing low enough, ASUS and Google decided against throwing in a shooter, but will anyone actually care? We know there may be certain situations that could arise where having a camera would be helpful, but is it necessary?

Another idea is that maybe it depends on the size of the tablet. Would a camera better suit a 10″ slate rather than the smaller 7″ devices? Let us know if having a camera on your tablet is a must or not.
