September’s Android Security Update is Rolling Out With First Nougat Patch

Google is pushing out September’s Android security update to Nexus devices today and has done so by already publishing both factory image and OTA .zip files. This is the first security patch for Nougat and that means new Android 7.0 builds for a few devices. They also provided the typical security bulletin as well.  (more…)

  • Nexus 5X Android 7.0 Nougat Factory Image Now Available

Nexus 5X Android 7.0 Nougat Factory Image Now Available

The first Android 7.0 Nougat batch of factory images and OTA .zip files for Nexus devices arrived earlier in the week, but the newest phones of the group didn’t see the love out of the gate. We’re talking about the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 6, all of which also happen to be Qualcomm-powered devices. That’s not me laying blame, it’s just a pointed observation about current and previous factory image releases related to Qualcomm devices.

Either way, the Nexus 5X files are now available for those who need them. The build is the same as the builds we saw earlier in the week – NRD90M.

    Go get em!  (more…)

Android 7.0 Nougat Factory Images Now Available! (Updated)

If you own a Nexus phone that is scheduled to receive the update to Android 7.0 Nougat, the time is now. Google has posted factory images and the OTA .zip files for those unwilling to wait for an over-the-air update to pop-up.

As of right now, we have Android 7.0 Nougat files for the Pixel C (NRD90M), Nexus 9 WiFi (NRD90M), and Nexus Player (NRD90M).

In case you hadn’t noticed something in common with the missing devices (Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, and Nexus 6), look at the processor – Qualcomm. We’ll update this post when those go live.

You can grab each image or OTA file at the links below. For instructions on how to flash a factory image, here you go. For instructions on how to flash an OTA .zip file, here you go(more…)

  • Telus, My New Favorite Company, Claims Nougat is Coming on August 22

Telus, My New Favorite Company, Claims Nougat is Coming on August 22

According to a software update schedule posted by Telus (very large Canadian telecomm company), Android 7.0, more popularly known as Nougat, will be available starting August 22. Please, excuse me while I furiously check my calendar. Mother of God, that’s next Monday. Have the boys in the lab confirm this!

As listed, the “Android N Update” will be available for the Huawei-made Nexus 6P and LG-made Nexus 5X. While this is by no means a confirmation directly from Google, and even Telus states that these times could be subject to change, we have a hunch that August 22 is spot on. Telus has a decent track record with these things. (more…)

  • Thursday Poll: Which Nexus Phone is Your All-Time Favorite?

Thursday Poll: Which Nexus Phone is Your All-Time Favorite?

We are getting close to Google’s unveiling of the Nexus devices for 2016, but before that happens, we wanted to get a feeling for which past released Nexus phone is your favorite. We’re talking all-time here.

Realizing not everyone here has owned each Nexus device, feel free to judge on which design you like the most, or even what version of Android it shipped with. The goal here is to find which Nexus device is the all-time favorite among DL folk.

Personally, while the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S would be in my Top 3, I have to give my all-time favorite choice to the Nexus 5. It felt great in-hand and Kit Kat was awesome.

    What about you?

  • About the LG V20 Being the First Android 7.0 Nougat Phone…

About the LG V20 Being the First Android 7.0 Nougat Phone…

LG, you sneaky devil, you. Surprising the world with an out-of-no-where announcement last night suggesting that you will be the first manufacturer to ship a phone with Android 7.0 Nougat. That phone, of course, is the LG V20. I like this move, not because you are shipping a device that is actually up-to-date, but because you confused the hell out of the timing of this whole Nougat situation. And now we get to talk about it.

To catch everyone up, understand that last night, LG announced the V20, saying that it will be the “world’s first phone to launch” with Android 7.0 Nougat. They added to that thought by clarifying that it will be the first to feature Android 7.0 “out of the box.” Ah ha!  (more…)
