Google Begins Posting OTA Images for Nexus Devices (the .Zip Files)

You know how we often spend days hunting down the over-the-air (OTA) .zip files for Nexus updates to try and get you updates faster than Google sends them? We may not need to do that any longer because Google started posting the files today. I’m not kidding – the .zip OTA files are now up on the Google Developers site, right next to the factory images.  (more…)

Jeff Koons Nexus Live Cases are Now Available for $40, and Here’s How to Make a Balloon Swan

The Jeff Koons designed Nexus Live Cases that Google began teasing yesterday are now available for purchase on the Google Store. Priced at $40, you will find three different limited edition cases, all of which are individually numbered.

Not familiar with Jeff Koons? I know nothing of him either, but Google calls him “one of the world’s greatest living artists” who is best known for his “Gazing Ball” series, where he re-creates previous masterpiece paintings and then places a large blue gazing ball in front of them. He also does public sculptures and created a special live wallpaper for these cases that is built from Koons’ favorite moments from the Swan Lake ballet.  (more…)

  • Buying an Unlocked Smartphone

    Buying an Unlocked Smartphone

I buy a lot of unlocked smartphones. In fact, as I type this, in front of me, there are eight smartphones on my desk and every single one of them is “unlocked.” Why do I buy them, you ask? For a number reasons, all of which I mentioned in this lengthy piece written about a year ago. The basics are this, though – they give me flexibility to test different networks, they often get faster software updates than carrier phones, they tend to be less expensive, and have far fewer bloatware apps than their relatives who are attached to carriers. They are the phones I will continue to choose time and time again.

With that in mind, I get the feeling that many of you are still confused as to what an unlocked smartphone is and may even need help in buying one. So today, let’s take a few minutes to talk through some of the things to look for when buying an unlocked smartphone.  (more…)

  • DEAL: Nexus 5X Back on eBay for Just $239.99 ($110 Off)

DEAL: Nexus 5X Back on eBay for Just $239.99 ($110 Off)

Another laughably low price is back and attached to the Nexus 5X over at eBay today. For just $239.99, you can own one of Google’s newest smartphones and get on with your Android N or update-first-having self. In case you were wondering, that’s a solid $110 discount before even factoring in the free shipping.

Like the deal a couple of weeks back, this 16GB Nexus 5X is the Euro model H791. That’s worth noting because even though it will still work in the US – on T-Mobile and AT&T – it won’t have the universal connectivity on Verizon and Sprint as well.
