Google Says “Nexus Orders are Shipped in Order Received” – Thoughts, Nexus 6P Owners?

On the morning of September 29, Google announced two new Nexus devices – the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Later that same day, Google opened up pre-orders for each with a mostly open-ended expected date of arrival. Android enthusiasts didn’t care about the lack of a shipping date, as they were simply too excited at the thought of being able to choose between two Nexus phones for the first time.

Three weeks went by and Google announced that Nexus 5X orders would begin shipping. And they did. Nexus 6P orderees were left a bit frustrated by the lack of word on their future phone, but assumed all would be well and things would start moving along shortly. And that happened too. Cards began to see charges and shipping noticed arrived. For some. Well, a few.  (more…)

  • Googler is Fighting the USB Type-C Cable Battle for You, Highlights Good and Bad on Amazon

Googler is Fighting the USB Type-C Cable Battle for You, Highlights Good and Bad on Amazon

You know how Google adopted USB Type-C with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and included the soon-to-be super convenient port in its new Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X? As we have mentioned a couple of times now, the future with Type-C will be great, it’s just that there is going to be this transitional period where it might get a bit messy first. Take for example the charging situation we documented just after each phone was released. Charger manufacturers haven’t been able to create new chargers that match not only the 5V/3A current that Google used with its phones, but they are also struggling to adopt the proper USB Type-C standard with cables.

To help save you some money and potentially prevent something “dangerous” from happening, Googler Benson Leung is documenting and reviewing a bunch of the 3rd party USB Type-C cables that can be found on Amazon. Leung is a Google software engineer whose team at Google has “been very big proponents and innovators of USB Type-C” and knows what he is talking about when it comes to Type-C. In fact, he has specifically worked on a couple of Pixel devices (new Chromebook Pixel has Type-C ports) that use Type-C, so he is quite familiar with it and its standards.  (more…)

Monday Poll: Which New Phone Did You Buy?

How many amazing phones have been released within the last three or four months? Seriously, think about it for a second. We got the Moto X Pure Edition, Galaxy Note 5, and the new iPhones around the same time. Then Google introduced the Nexus 6P and 5X, before LG could show off the V10. And even more recently, Motorola gave us two new DROIDs in the Turbo 2 and MAXX 2, plus the HTC One A9 snuck in there. There are amazing choices for phones everywhere you look, from every major manufacturer.

So in today’s poll, we are keeping it simple. Which of the new phones introduced in recent months did you buy or are considering buying? If you want, feel to tell everyone why, as we get asked constantly which phone we would recommend. Because we trust the reader voice, we would appreciate your feedback as a place to direct readers from time to time.

    Nexus 5X Review

“The all around champ is back.” That’s Google’s description of the Nexus 5X, which in a way marks the return of a phone that most people would consider to be the best Nexus phone ever made. They are referencing the original Nexus 5 in that quote, of course, a phone that like this 5X was made by LG. Google heard the cries last year of people not wanting an oversized phone when it introduced the whale-esque Nexus 6, and they answered those tears for 2015.

The Nexus 5X is a lot like the original Nexus 5. Again, it’s made by LG, but it also looks very similar, is finished very similar, and carries that similarly low price tag. The goal seems to have been to make the Nexus 5 all over again, but upgrade its parts and hopefully, address the one weak point – the camera. In our early tests, we found the camera to be quite good. So if they made right on that weak point, what about the rest? Is this really the return of the champ? Let’s find out.

This is our Nexus 5X review.  (more…)

Fingerprint Cards AB, Makers of the Sensor Found in the Nexus 5X and 6P, was Almost Bought by Samsung

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P feature Android Imprint, the name given to what is the fingerprint reader and software that utilizes it on the latest flagship devices from Google. More interestingly, the maker of the reader hardware itself, Fingerprint Cards AB, was almost acquired by Samsung a couple of years ago for a whopping $650 million.

Today, as we can see, that deal never came to be, and now Fingerprint Card AB’s technology is not only seen in the Nexus phones, but in the OnePlus 2, LG V10, and the upcoming Robin from Nextbit.  (more…)
