Google just posted the Android 7.1.1 Developer Preview files for the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C! The timing is perfect, since the Pixel and Pixel XL are arriving in Verizon stores as early as tomorrow with 7.1. Google did tell us to expect it before the end of October, so they nailed that timeline as well. (more…)

Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P Owners, Pixel Camera APK Now Downloadable
For anyone with a compatible device, being the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P currently, the Camera V4.2 apk file from the Pixel devices is now downloadable. Not only will you need a specific Nexus device, you also need to be running an official build of Android 7.0+, and not a custom ROM. So, if you have a Nexus 5X or Nexus 6P running stock Nougat, you should be groovy. (more…)

Here’s Everything That is New in Android 7.1
The Android team has detailed the changes in Android 7.1, which is labeled as an “incremental” update to the existing Android 7.0 build. Even with a label like incremental, though, there are still plenty of goodies baked in.
Let’s take a gander at what’s new. (more…)

Android 7.1 Announced, Coming as Developer Preview “This Month”
Google just announced Android 7.1 Nougat, while also revealing further details about how 7.1 will get to your phone, including the current Nexus devices that have yet to be retired. According to Google, it should be here as a Developer Preview “later this month.” (more…)

Android 7.1 Will Hit Current Nexus Devices and Pixel C as Developer Preview Before 2017
The following news is important for current Nexus owners, so listen up. Google has confirmed that Android 7.1, the version that ships with the Pixel and Pixel XL, will indeed eventually make its way to Nexus devices and the Pixel C. While this is great news, there is a downside. Google states that Android 7.1 will first be made available as a Developer Preview, which will roll out no later than the end of Q4. Put more simply, expect an update near year’s end, but only if you are enrolled in the Android Beta Program.
To go along with this, it is also unclear which Nexus devices will receive Android 7.1 support. While we can say with near certainty that the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P will see it, it’s up in the air for the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. On top of that, the Android 7.1 that newer Nexus device owners see is rather different from what is showcased on the Pixel phones. (more…)

On the Flip: Google, Don’t Do This to Nexus Owners
I think I’ve made it clear that I think Google’s Pixel phones are still going to be the best choice for Android purists who have long-been Nexus owners. I also fully understand that the price hike won’t ever be justifiable to many and that Google has pissed off some of its strongest supporters by shifting gears. But I think what should really be a major talking point, is how current Nexus owners seem to be getting the raw end of the whole deal.
Yesterday, Google showed us not only two new phones, they also showed us the next version of Android which happens to be 7.1. Under normal circumstances, that’s a big reveal for owners of Nexus devices because that means a major update (with new features) is on the way in the very near future. Except, well, not this time. October’s Android Security Update is Rolling Out (Updated: Nexus 6 Nougat!)
Google is pushing out October’s Android security update (
at least we’re assuming that’s what this is; Edit: Yep, it is!) to Nexus devices today and has done so by already publishing both factory image and OTA .zip files. This is the second security patch for Nougat and that means new Android 7.0 builds for a few devices. The security bulletin should be up soon as well (Edit: It is!). (more…) -

Google’s WiFi Assistant Seems to be Rolling Out to Non-Project Fi Nexus Devices Today
Project Fi’s exclusive WiFi Assistant feature that has allowed Nexus owners to automatically connect securely to open WiFi networks appears to be rolling out to non-Fi Nexus owners at the moment. Google first announced WiFi Assistant for all Nexus phones back in August, suggesting that we would start seeing it within the “next few weeks.” It looks like we made it there. (more…)
