Within the “next few weeks,” Google will allow Android Pay users to add their PayPal accounts as a payment method. As someone who has used PayPal for the better part of a decade or more, f*ck yeah!
The option isn’t available just yet, but Google did say in a short announcement that you’ll simply “link” your account. Once you’ve done that (see image above), tapping and paying with PayPal will work like it does with your attached credit cards at any locations Android Pay is accepted (online, in apps, and in-person).
This is pretty big news.
I got the update last night for Droid Turbo 2 finally able to bypass Altier CU refusal to sign Android Pay agreement. Used it this morning works perfectly. Note that it does take a $10 draw from your funding source to initially load a credit to your PayPal account. I used Android Pay on a vending machine for a soda this morning no issues.
As of today still not seeing any added ability to link Android Pay to PayPal account…Any updates on the release date for this functionality?
Can count the amount of times using Android pay on both hands. After this not so much. That’s freaking awesome!!!! Good move Google!!! Good move!!!
This is HUGE for us who bank with small banks that will never get on board with AP
Sweat I will finally be able to use my bank debit card in Android Pay!
So instead of paying with my credit card, or paying with Android Pay which is linked to my credit card, now I can pay with Android Pay, which is linked to my PayPal account, which is linked to my credit card!
WE HAVE TO GO DEEPER.
I was just thinking that too. Or your debit card that is probably already in android pay. I prefer to stick with credit cards because points.
Paying with PayPal with a CC is security and safety compounded on each other and should be the only way you pay electronically.
There is no protection with paypal, never link a bank account. Link a CC and keep a zero balance to be on the safe side. Too many people have been burned in the past.
You have same issues with a debit card from a bank
I had the exact opposite experience with PayPal. Bought a video game from Groupon and after 2 weeks it never shipped, I called PayPal they opened a dispute ticket and within the hour my money was back in the acct. If I had lost the dispute or the item had shipped within “x amount of time” they would have just re-debited the money. I have never had money returned to my bank acct or credited from a CC that fast ever. So I believe PayPal is the safest form of payment; I even, stupidly, sent a seller money thru “friends and family” and they never shipped the merchandise, I disputed it and because in the notes I stated it was for a purchase of goods they even gave that money back it wasn’t instant like the 1st example but I got it back within a week.
Just curious how people use their Paypal account. Do people really store a lot of money on their Paypal? I only have it linked to my bank account which pulls money from it so my Paypal account is always at $0.00. Using it with Android Pay for me would just be the same as using my normal bank card.
You can also link cards. It’s extremely helpful because it’s secure and if anything goes wrong, Paypal has you covered
Yeah, I have my Paypal account linked to my regular bank card. That’s why I said, for me anyway, it would be the same as just using my regular bank card with Android Pay. I do see a benefit if your bank card isn’t supported in Android Pay though like others have mentioned here. That’s a big advantage.
Well, if you have Paypal credit you can use that to pay for any purchases, so it has double benefits.
You can link your bank accounts, credit cards and or use Paypal credit to pay for your purchases, is very convenient when you’re purchasing stuff online since most places accept Paypal.
So will I be able to use my PayPal Credit account with it so that i can get 6 months no payments on purchases over 100 bucks? or will I only be able to link my paypal balance and other credit cards?
That’s my biggest question, which I thing the answer will be yes but we’ll have to double check with Paypal since they won’t be an option (most likely) to choose when paying through Android Pay,
Too bad the April update to my Nexus 6 killed Android pay. Maybe May will fix it?
Yay!
They should allow Paypal for everything. I try to not shop anywhere that doesn’t allow it
I actually get kind of annoyed when places don’t accept it.
Whats strange is my local bottle store accepts Pay, but homedepot doesnt!!
Because Home Depot wants you to use their on Credit account, it’s stupid but I hope they change their ways.
That’s more applicable to Walmart, but regardless both are lacking when it comes to electronic payments
Actually, I use Walmart Pay when I shop. Store your information, scan the QR code on the card reader and when you are done, no physical receipt and you can auto submit to Savings Catcher. They will also have Scan and Go at Walmart like they do at Sam’s Club. Shop, scan, finish, pay through the app and head to the door and bypass the line… it’s been Goodbye Costco for me.
So, Walmart is not “lacking” at all.
Costco offers a similar option in some locations. I used it once and it was really easy.
Do they offer “Scan and Go” or “Self Checkout?” I wasn’t aware of Scan and Go from Costco and I haven’t seen any type of app for this. I know about Self Checkout in Costco.
It’s kind of a hybrid. You pick up a scanning device at the entrance, scan items as you physically add them to your cart, then bring everything to a special station near the registers, where an employee checks everything and you pay. You can also put your items into boxes, like they do at traditional registers.
That would work for me… well, as opposed to waiting in one of those horrible lines. I wish they would implement that in all the stores.
If they ever get it, I may find my way back to Costco. They are more conveniently located near where I live… all 4 of them. I only have one Sam’s Club in town and while it’s not a horrible drive to get there, it’s less convenient than Costco.
Thanks for the info!!!
It’s about damn time.
So we will now be able to use a card that hasn’t been approved by Android Pay?
I’m assuming you could connect that card you are referencing through PayPal and use it, yes.
If this is true then that is great. I have two banks and they both only use Apple Pay.

I hope so. This would basically mean you could now use any of your cards and quit waiting for your bank to get with the times! Awesome news!

I’ll be interested to see how that plays out. After all the BS they’ve gone through to get banks to allow their payment method, to now just be handed a golden cow like that? Seems fishy. Color me skeptical.
