  • Google Wallet Becomes Google Pay Send Until Google Pay Gets Send/Request Money Feature

Google Wallet Becomes Google Pay Send Until Google Pay Gets Send/Request Money Feature

While Google begins making the shift of Android Pay to Google Pay today, you may be curious what the future holds for Google Wallet. For the next few months, it’ll still live on, but it’s being rebranded as well. Google Wallet will become Google Pay Send until Google can bake send/request money features into Google Pay.

The announcement for Google Wallet was attached to the bottom of today’s Google Pay news. Google said to expect not only a name change, but “a fresh coat of paint to go with the Google Pay brand” as well. And again, this is happening because Google Pay will get the ability to send and request money “within the next few months.” At that point, Google Pay Send will likely be retired.

Google hasn’t quite flipped the switch on Wallet on Google Play just yet. I’d bet that’ll happen within the next few hours. Again, be on the lookout for an update!

  • Android Pay App Makes the Switch to Google Pay, Gets Spicy New UI (Updated)

Android Pay App Makes the Switch to Google Pay, Gets Spicy New UI (Updated)

The next time you see an update to your Android Pay app, it will no longer be called Android Pay. Instead, Google will flip the switch over to the Google Pay branding it told us to expect back in January.

The change happened on Google Play over night and not only shows a change in name, but a refreshed UI as well. While I have yet to receive the update that changes the name, the new listing shows the branding and screenshots of what we can expect. Take a look.

This new, heavily white UI, is no longer filled from edge to edge with a stack of your cards. Instead, Google has made everything smaller, added more info to the front page (like recent activity), and tossed in a slideout menu to house settings. It’s clean!

UPDATE: Google has now announced that today is the day for Google Pay to arrive.

In this new UI, the home tab not only shows your current active card an recent purchases, it’ll be there to help you find nearby stores, access rewards, and even offer up tips. A new cards tab has arrived too, as well as a new fast way to pay for transit in select cities (Kiev, London, and Portland), where “all you need at the turnstile is the device that’s already in your hand.”

Finally, Google says to expect the ability to send and request money within the next few months in the US and UK.

Here’s another look at the new UI:

  • Google Pay Branding Starting to Show Itself on Android Devices

Google Pay Branding Starting to Show Itself on Android Devices

Earlier this month, Google announced that the new Google Pay brand would combine both Android Pay and Google Wallet. Well, the branding is starting to make its way to Android devices, but we aren’t entirely sure how long it’s been there.

On both of our Pixel 2 XL phones in the office and on at least one of our reader’s Moto X Pure, inside of the Tap & Pay settings menu where you select which default service is used when conducting NFC payments, there’s a large Google Pay logo.

When Google Pay was announced, Google never specifically detailed how the rollout would occur. Would the Android Pay app remain and receive a rebrand? Would a new Google Pay app take its place? We still have no idea because Google hasn’t made any of the details known, but at least something is happening.

To see if your Pixel or other Android phone is showing the new Google Pay option, go into your Settings, locate the Default Apps menu (you can just use the search function), then click “Tap & pay.” Under Payment default you should see the G Pay logo.

Are you seeing the G Pay option? If so, what phone are you using?

    Cheers Jacob!

Android Pay Adds 80 New Banks and Credit Unions

We haven’t been consistent in our coverage of the new banks and credit unions that are constantly added to Android Pay’s (Google Pay?) supported list, but today we thought would be a great time to give you an update, since Google added another 80 of them. This brings the total to 1,196 supported banks and credit unions for Google’s mobile payment platform. That’s a lot!

At this point, since Android Pay has been around for so long, all of the big players have been included. That means we’re onto the smaller financial institutions from across the country. We’ve got the full list of the new guys below.

  • Google Pay Arrives to Combine Android Pay, Google Wallet

Google Pay Arrives to Combine Android Pay, Google Wallet

RIP, Android Pay and Google Wallet. Hello, Google Pay.

Google announced this morning that Google Pay has arrived to combine all of their payment options under a single brand. From Android Pay and Google Wallet, to your payment info stored in Chrome and paying for items on Google Play, Google Pay will now handle it all.

I know, I know, you want to ask why the hell did Google separate all of these years ago? This is Google, so don’t try and understand the odd decisions they often make or you’ll ruin your day. Just know that this should be a good change. No one liked 3 or 4 different payment experiences from different Google products and this should eliminate that pain. We think.

    google pay apps

Google says to expect the Google Pay rollout to stores, apps, and their own products to happen over the coming weeks. Apps like Airbnb, Dice, Fandango, HungryHouse, and Instacart have already made the switch to Google Pay.

We aren’t sure what will happen to the Android Pay and Google Wallet apps, though. Will they merge and become Google Pay? Will they stay separate and simply receive new branding? Will we get a new Google Pay app? We don’t know!

We’ll let you know as this rollout begins to take shape.

  • Bugdroid Justice League Heroes Invade Android Pay

Bugdroid Justice League Heroes Invade Android Pay

To celebrate the launch of the new Justice League movie, the Android Pay team has worked in a few new characters and animations when you make purchases using your phone.

As you will see, the new Bugdroid toons are based on The Flash, Wonder Woman, Batman, Aquaman, and Cyborg. When you make purchases using Android Pay, the little toons will do nifty animations, and you’ll unlock all of the characters by making more purchases.

According to Google, you won’t know who you’ll unlock first until you make a purchase, so if you’re in a race to unlock them all, just go for it. All you need is the latest update to the Android Pay app, linked below.

  • Pay With Google Now an Option For Mobile Users on Chrome and in Select Apps

Pay With Google Now an Option For Mobile Users on Chrome and in Select Apps

Not too long ago, paying for anything on a mobile device could be a real hassle. You’d have to fill out the payment info on a tiny screen, hope the app doesn’t crash, and the experience was hardly ever painless. Today, that changes, with Google launching Pay With Google.

With this, your mobile shopping/ordering dreams have come true, as there will soon be no more need to type in your credit card info, shipping address, or any other pesky info when buying something on your phone. Rolling out to a few apps (listed below) and Chrome, when a purchase process is nearly complete, Android users will be met with a new option to Pay With Google. So long as you have any payment option saved to your Google account (from YouTube, Google Play, Android Pay, etc.), Google can securely share that payment information with the merchant, without you having to retype any of that information.

Honestly, this should be a real time saver.

Now, as for which apps support this right off the bat, there is Chrome (web shopping), Doordash, Yelp Eat24, Fancy, GameTime, Kayak, Postmates, Wish, and others. Other retailers will get in on this action, too, including Airbnb, Boxed, Papa Johns, StubHub, Just Eat, Hotel Tonight, and many more.

If you are a developer and want to integrate this new service for shoppers, head over here.

You may not see this option everywhere starting today, but soon, the idea is that this will be common nearly everywhere you shop online.

    Go give it a try!

  • Android Pay Arrives in Canada

    Android Pay Arrives in Canada

Starting today, Google is rolling out Android Pay across Canada and into the phones of our friends to the north. As shocking as it might be that Canada hasn’t had Android Pay until today, I think I’m more shocked that the image above from Google doesn’t feature poutine. Like, come on. It’s Canada, Google, where’s the poutine? I want poutine right now and I’m in Oregon. Missed opportunity, tbh.

But yeah! Android Pay in Canada!   (more…)
