Bluetooth Battery Indicator API Hitting AOSP

According to information dug up on AOSP by XDA, Google is working to bring default retrieval of battery information from connected Bluetooth devices.

For instance, if you use an Android device that doesn’t already have this feature built in, you’ll be able to check the connected Bluetooth device’s battery levels directly from your smartphone, such as your headphones and any other Bluetooth accessory.

Currently, there are a few devices that already have this, like those from Samsung, OnePlus, and LG. However, many others do not, so seeing this pop up in AOSP, meaning it should be standard on all Android devices, is exciting.

Considering this is the first we’re hearing of it, and the final developer preview for Android 8.0 has already been released, it’s reasonable to say that this new API won’t be ready in time for Android O’s public release. It could see launch in the next version of Android, though, or even in a subsequent update to 8.0. We don’t have those details yet and Google hasn’t openly spoken about this development.

We’ll keep you posted.

  • I have the Samsung Galaxy S8 and it absolutely does NOT show any battery info for bluetooth devices.

  • I have a OnePlus 3T. I had no idea this feature was already built in. I use wireless headphones almost daily. Now I just have to figure out how to find the info in my phone.

  • I just happy as hell that the O beta has AVRCP 1.6 as an option. I can FINALLY browse my playlists in my car. Now If Google Music team would update their app to push the Album Art I would finally be happy.

  • Wow, this is something that I definitely take for granted on my android phones. I hope it comes quickly for those that don’t have it.

  • It’s only been on iOS for a few years… But I thought Android had all the features and only iOS borrowed things?

    • Android also gets the best bugs. Like the Bluetooth volume issue where they closed the case because they added a workaround in developer options but never tested it so the workaround doesnt work. Case closed + broken workaround = never gonna be fixed.

  • I am running the Android O beta, and maybe it is a problem on my Nexus 6p or not, but battery life is horribly down and what is causing it is bluetooth. Not sure if this is related or not.

    • The problem is that you have one of the many 6ps with sht battery. Call Google and them you need a replacement.

      • We’re so far outside of the warranty window, I doubt they’d help us now. Mine has been turning off around 30-40% now. Hate this phone!

        • Not about warranty. This is an issue Huawei and Google are familiar with (see reddit)… Just call them, trust me.

          • Yeah, I know there’s a lawsuit going on. Just didn’t think they’d still be doing something about it. Maybe I’ll give them a call this week.

    • I have the O Beta on my PXL and it’s actually getting the best battery it has yet and I have an OG 360 connected to it as well as either a BT speaker at home or the BT in my car each day also.

I know that doesn’t help you out much, but the next gen Pixel isn’t too far off…
