Ever been using your phone as an actual phone, then held your device awkwardly while on a call and the screen rotates due to your system’s orientation setting? Yeah, apparently you’re not alone. Google is sending out a “fix” to its Phone app right now.
In the latest build of the Phone app, plus needing a server side switch, a new setting inside of the app is specifically for keeping portrait mode enabled when on calls. This setting will prevent accidental auto rotation, which could spare you a brief moment of frustration.
According to quite a few folks on reddit, this is a very welcomed setting. Props to Google for this one.

Apparently "calls" has more complaints than most apps.
The REAL annoying part of talking on a call is your ear is touching the phone, pulling the shade down, changing settings -you go to end the call (or send a picture) and – "what the heck? Where am I, why is the phone here? Where's the phone app?"
Or – I answered a call while listening to music, where I had to explicitly switch from Bluetooth to "phone" to take the call – I walk to another room – my ear somehow sends it back to the Bluetooth speaker – at BEST causing an unprofessional explanation for why I'm asking them to repeat themselves, or me to repeat myself.
Ugh! THAT problem needs fixing before THIS one.
There needs to be a "prevent shade from sliding when on call" setting. I know I had an old Samsung that did this back in the day.
Or, ironically, locking the app in landscape mode instead might fix this ACTUAL problem.
HAHA Just submitted this as feedback in the app. I am glad I wasn't alone in this stupidity.
Thank goodness!
Why introduce a toggle? Just write the code to fix it and have it in portrait mode no matter the orientation of the Pixel. Major red flag if someone enjoys phone calls in landscape mode. Straight up serial killer vibes there
I wonder why this type of change would require a server side switch.
Because Google, that's why. LOL
