Facebook Announces Messenger Lite, Catered to Those With Older Phones and Slower Connections

Facebook announced Messenger Lite this morning, a retooled Messenger app for users with aging devices, or who are in areas with slower data connection speeds. With the Lite version, folks from all over can stay connected with their friends and family, without having to worry about Messenger hogging all sorts of data.

Messenger Lite weighs in at just under 10MB, a big slim down from the standard version we use here in the US. To make the app smaller, it appears Facebook has stripped a few features, with the big one being Chat Heads. However, users on the Lite version can still send and receive texts, links to webpages, share photos, and see stickers.  (more…)

Facebook Marketplace Lets You Buy, Sell Items Around Your Area

I can’t remember the exact year it was, but quite a few years ago, I attempted to purchase a laptop from Craigslist. Given there is no longer an active police investigation taking place, I can tell you that not only did I not get a laptop, but I was also out $400. TL;DR version: I got robbed. It was from that moment on that I never used Craigslist again, considering you just never know who you are meeting up with.

Now in 2016, Facebook is attempting to get people buying and selling, this time with something called Marketplace. Baked right into your existing Facebook experience, users can simply post pictures of things they want to sell, or browse items already for sale in their area. (more…)

  • Google Shares a Bunch of New Voice Commands for Your Next Google Maps Adventure

Google Shares a Bunch of New Voice Commands for Your Next Google Maps Adventure

Through a new blog post, Google is doing its best to make sure you are always getting the most out of one of its greatest apps, Google Maps. The post talks about using voice commands to get you to that next destination, tweak settings, avoid tolls, and even get out of navigation if you just want to look at a map.

All of this voice magic can happen within both navigation and driving modes because each contains a UI with a little white microphone. So in reality, anywhere you see that microphone within Google Maps will open up voice capabilities. Not familiar with driving mode? Open up Maps, swipe out the side menu, and tap on “Start driving.” I think you’ll like it.  (more…)
