  • Google’s Phone App for Nexus Devices Gets Spam Calling Protection

Google’s Phone App for Nexus Devices Gets Spam Calling Protection

Google is updating the Phone app that is included on their Nexus devices to include spam protection against unwanted calls. The newest version of the app will alert you as a call is coming in if it may be a “suspected” spam caller (see below) and then let you take additional actions on it.

With Caller ID & spam protection turned on, users will be able to both block and report spam calls. From within the Recent calls log, a tap on a call you’d like to report will offer up an option to “Block / report spam.” You should see options to both report as spam and then block, assuming you want to do both.  (more…)

  • DEAL: Nexus 5X 32GB for $240, Nexus 6 for $280

    DEAL: Nexus 5X 32GB for $240, Nexus 6 for $280

To head into the weekend, we’ve got a couple of decent deals for you on Nexus devices, assuming you need a good phone on the cheap that actually receives software updates and security patches. You can pick-up last year’s Nexus 5X with 32GB storage for just $239.99 or the previously released Nexus 6 32GB for $279.99.

The Nexus 5X is available at the price ($160 discount) in either white or black as a brand new unit and is shipped to you for free. This is the US model, so it’ll work on all US carriers, including AT&T and Verizon.

As for the Nexus 6, the listing states that it is “new other,” which means it might come in packaging other than its original retail box. It doesn’t say refurbished, so it still should be an unused phone. You can choose from either white or blue models and it too ships for free.

July’s Android Security Update Kicks Off Today With Factory Image Files, OTA Files

  • DEALS: Unlocked Galaxy S7 Duos Just $499, 32GB Nexus 5X for $239

    DEALS: Unlocked Galaxy S7 Duos Just $499, 32GB Nexus 5X for $239

eBay has cooked up two serious deals today that include the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Nexus 5X. The Galaxy S7, in all its unlocked, dual-SIM glory, can be had for just $499, while the Nexus 5X with 32GB of storage is all the way down to $239.

If you are interested in the Galaxy S7, I’m not sure you will find a better deal than this. This is a 32GB unlocked version with dual SIM slots, so you can travel easily with this phone without swapping SIMs. This particular variant is model SM-G930FD and works on GSM networks in the US like T-Mobile and AT&T. It will not work on Verizon or Sprint. The only real issue here is that it more than likely won’t work with Samsung Pay because of its international nature.  (more…)

  • Google Listing Android Update Death Dates for Nexus Devices (Updated)

Google Listing Android Update Death Dates for Nexus Devices (Updated)

As we already know, Android software updates typically last for two years following the launch of a device. This goes for pretty much every OEM, although, not every device sees that type of support. However, when it comes to Google and its lineup of Nexus devices, the company is usually quite good about supporting its smartphones and tablets.

Listed on a support page this week, Google is now detailing the timeframes that owners of these select devices should start really thinking about an upgrade. For Nexus phones and tablets, the Android software updates will last “at least” two years, but for security patches, the updates will continue for about three years after launch.  (more…)
